May's issue of Car just landed on the doorstep this morning. Page 104, STi8 PPP versus Evo 8.
Predictable result from Mark Walton (acknowledged Evo fan).... '.... the Evo VIII is the car I'd rather drive - quickly - every day.'
Will the mags ever prefer the Scoob???

I'm still amazed anyone cares what the mags say? Read mag, spot a few things you like, take a testdrive, buy if you like it, walk away if you don't.
I own the cars *I* like. Anyone else's opinions are unimportant.

I don't really care what a mag says about my car. Like Chuck, if I were undecided, I'd use the mags as a guide, test 'em and make a decision.
Just remember that these guys don't have to fuel, service, maintain or insure the cars they test, so some 'real world' issues are never even considered. What do they care if a car has 1000 mile service intervals, or needs new tyres every month.
Clarkson summed up the difficulties quite well last weekend, saying that he'd have the STi for the twisties, and the Evo for open roads. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to drive our cars on both, so we just pick the one we like.

Also he is talking about everyday. The Sti8 is more focused and as a result less of a relaxing drive, but if thats what you like (and i do hence my sti8 sitting outside) then great. But as a supple all rounder for the "family" the Evo8 is probably more of a comprimse.

Josh, you're so right.
I have recently been on the hunt for a new car to replace my 2000 Turbo and, believe me I looked at ALL the usual (and some that aren't) contenders. The EVO VII that I tried was a great car but was just far too impractical for every day use (and it sounds like a very fast spin drier). I really didn't 'get' the Focus RS, it's lethal on the typical roads near me. Yet, with few exceptions, the mags rave over them both because of what they can do 5% of the time.
The car I drive has to work for it's living, it's not just there for the B road burn-up. I might have to go and see a client 200 miles away and I want to complete the trip without feeling I've had the sh*t kicked out of me. I also don't want to have the thing in for service every 4,500 miles, nor do I want a car that feels like its going to break if I thrash it's nuts off. I DO want a car that meets all my requirements all the time. I ordered an STi8.

Come on lads, I just nipped out to stand in my local WHS and stingily read the article for free. There's clearly nothing in it, and old whatsit just has to come down on one side or another to make an article out of it. All these practical arguments about how the floormats wear better in the STi are making me want to buy an EVO! It's the sheer f**ckoffness of 'em both that makes them what they are. I'm happy with my Scoob cheers Mr Journo.

If every car mag said scoobys just cant be beaten - top buy, go and get one today, the sales would increase.
You would end up with more idiots buying them just because the
mags say they are "the" car to have. This would no doubt result in
more accidents through poor driving abilities. End result - our
insurance premiums would go up
Much better to leave them as enthusiasts cars for the people that matter - us

We don't care what the magazines say until they really sing the Scoobs praises then we bore everyone to death.
Jeremy Clarkson is my exception to this rule as his reviews rarely feature the car in question, just his clumsy attempts to get a laugh or two.

Let's be honest here, if the impreza had won, there would be huge amounts of triumphalism on show and the magazines, who 'got it right', would be the very essence of impartial objectivity!

The Evo VIII still has a 4500 mile service interval I believe. The tyres are bigger and more expensive. It's a more focusesd sports car but far less of an everyday road-eater. Just too expensive to run.

Horses for courses really. Evo's have almost always been ultimately the faster car - if that is what you want, go and buy one. Personally, as much as I admire them, I always found them a bit bland. Not very scientific, I know, but it's the reason I've owned two Scoobs. They have a charisma about them that the Evo's don't have.
In the real world, either of these cars is going to be amazing. I do agree with the comments in Car though that perhaps the styling of the new STI8 is perhaps just a little OTT. Maybe it is time for a change..
Incidently, read Auto Express this week and they praise the Evo 8's brakes saying how much better they are than the Scoob's. Read Car Magazine and they say almost the opposite! I guess it really depends on what you prefer at the end of the day.
I also read that Subaru UK have not yet sold an STI 8 without PPP - is this true? Well done if that is the case![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

So, in summary, is it the case that:-
If the Evo wins a particular magazine's road test, we all say that either a) the mag is crap or b) it's down to personal preference.
And, if the STi wins, then the mag/journo has got it right.
So, maybe we're all biased after all. Oh - I've just realised why we're all on Scoobynet in the first place!

One of the worst mags at the moment imho is Autocar. The number of times they have contradicted themselves when testing/driving various Impreza models (MY01 WRX, UK300, STI7, STI8) is unbelievable. These guys must be nothing more than jumped up journalists with just a passing interest in cars. They love the RS Focus to bits though, maybe thats because its a Ford, and Fords are popular with Joe Bloke so maybe they can sell more magazines by writing what Mr Average wants to hear
