please explain terminology.....?

Evening all, I've owned my Turbo wagon 2000 for a month tomorrow and I think it's probably the best car i've owned although my Alfa 164 Cloverleaf (3L V6) is a close second, and I think that the info that most of you guys offer is invaluable both from an ownership and drivership point of view, the alfa forum provided much the same value but on a smaller scale as you can probably imagine (only 200 ever imported to UK).
I am not a mechanic by any means but I am picking up things as i read your' daily posts, however, some of the terminology you use so freely has me stumped.........WHAT THE HELL IS.......?
1) Detting.
2) Knocklink
3) remapping.
No I'm not thick, just don't understand what you are talking about.
With regards to servicing, my car is a 96-P, 83k on clock and have had the luxury of speaking to both previous owners (both middle aged) and have had the cars authenticity confirmed. As a precaution and as a result of your various posts, I have decided to have Subaru carry out a full service, although I have a fully stamped and receipted service history. WOW,this first month has flown and I've already learned so much about what I thought was a very first but ordinary jap carriage. How wrong could I have been?
Many thanx to all
SKOOSH.

Do my best
1) Detting.
Detonation, knock or pinking. When the air/fuel mix is exploding in the cylinder before the spark plug has fired to ignite the mixture. It is caused by running poor fuel or running lean. It knackers the engine over long (or sometimes short) periods and makes a knocking noise -hence knock.
Read this thread for more info Blown engine through detonation
2) Knocklink
A microphone like device which listens to the engine to pick up the sound made by detting. It then alerts the driver to the situation.
3) remapping.
Re-programing the ECU to change the engine map - the software the engine uses to run. This is done following modifications to improve the pwer of the engine.
Hope this helps and as always, I await to be corrected .

I am not a mechanic either so this maybe wrong but its how I understand it
1) Detting.
Basically is pre-detonation of the fuel ie the piston is in the wrong place normally on an up stroke and the fuel burns to early and tries to push the piston back down. Eventually overtime this cause heat and the piston melts and/or comes out of the side of the block. Its also known as "pinking" due to the metallic sound it makes. You can hear it at low revs but high revs not much chance IMHO.
2) Knocklink
A piece of equipment which can be fitted for about £100 which detects detting and has lights and an alram ( I think to tell you to calm down if things are not going well)
3) remapping.
This is putting a new map onto you ECU or replacing your whole ECU for safety or more power or both.
One of the most useful things on scoobynet is the search facility as most question have been asked before and your get an instant answer or conflicting one usual

The definitions of "detting are fine. I think its worth adding though that detonation is seriously bad for the engine. The pre-ignition of the fuel mixture can be so violent that is is like clouting the piston top with a lump hammer, all those times per minutes depending on the revs. It will also put a dreadful load into the big end bearings.
