Anyone had a old shape Impeza and now got a 03 with Prodrive pack- Questions
#1
1) I really didn't like the gear box on my one car, syncro's failed and it was generally crap. Is the 03 any better?
A Gearbox is far better feels like a shorter throw beyween gears the only thing to remember is to push against the gate when going into 5th and 6th
2) The clutch used judder first thing when cold and really used to **** me off. Is this sorted on the 03.
A No judder too date
3) Does the O3WRX drink as much juice as the old model, cos my 99 loved the stuff.
A Getting 23 mpg at the moment
4) Old model a bit slow at the top end, 03 any better?
A Dunno what you mean by top end...top end revs or top end mph? Haven't pushed either but it is far far quicker between 4-5000 rpm...can never see the point in bouncing the revs on the rev limiter...power delivery a lot smoother throughout the whole range.....feels a lot quicker
5)Is the older shape Impeza and the WRX(with the prodrive kit) about even speed wise.
STi with PPP is significantly faster

Went from an my00 to an my03wrx with ppp.
Gearbox seems fine but then i never had any noticable probs with my old one.( had quickshift).
The clutch judder really p1ssed me off too but thankfully the new one is as smooth cold as it is warm.
As for the fuel i'd say it's slightly better but then i never got it for economy.
With the ppp it pulls right through the range and in 4th & 5th there is a big difference with all the extra torque.
I can honestly say the new car is faster accelerating and definitely faster higher up the range and would get you from 70 to 150 ( on a private road of course ) a LOT quicker.
I too loved my classic and was never sure i was doing the right thing but now after running it in and then finding out its true potential all i can say is DO IT, you wont regret it.

MY 03 WRX with PPP (fitted at 1.8k miles). New on 1st March.
1) Fine so far... 3100 miles
2) No judder here.
3) Average over 3000 miles has been 30 mpg, no kidding. Sensible driving, good mix of long trips, around town, and quick blasts. All receipts, mileages etc recorded.
4) No complaints, doesn't go noticeable flat like my Boxster.
5)Don't know.

My 03 WRX with PPP fitted at 1400 miles old car was 98MY no mods (though that was a couple of cars ago).
(1) No complaints about the 'box so far but then I didn't really have any about the MY98 car.
(2) Clutch judder does seem much improved. i.e. I haven't noticed any at all in 2K miles.
(3) Definate improvement in thirst. I was getting high teens/ low 20's in the MY98 - not done the sums on this one but so far, a definate improvement. Far fewer trips to the Optimax pump.
(4) & (5) Hard to give accurate performance feedback as I got rid of the original scoob some time ago. I'd say that the 03 PPP WRX is the quicker of the 2 - certainly feels it and is easier to drive quick - probably due the the extra torque of the PPP. All round, the car is a huge improvement. Let's face it, we all love these cars for lots of good reasons, performance is usually high on the list, but taking that point aside, the 03 model is improved in just about everyway over the original IMHO. Standard stereo is still pretty dire though ;-)

MY99 turbo 215bhp and 1235kgs = 174bhp/ton
MY03 WRX without PPP 225bhp and 1395kgs = 161 bhp/ton
MY03 WRX with PPP 260bhp and 1395kgs = 186 bhp/ton
So yes on paper you will need the PPP fitting for the MY03 to have a better PTW.

I went to MY03 PPP'd from tech3 MY00 - and don't regret it at all
No probs on MY00 gearchange so can't say
No clutch judder
Get more miles to a tank (but still running in!)
Much more refined - but this weekend when its been serviced I'll tell you how performance compares (don't think I'll be dissappionted tho' - it seems very promising )

Hi all
I sold my 99my Turbo a while ago now, but still think about it alot and am considering a 03 WRX with a Prodrive pack, but a few things put me off getting a new one.
So could anyone answer a few qusetions.
1) I really didn't like the gear box on my one car, syncro's failed and it was generally crap. Is the 03 any better?
2) The clutch used judder first thing when cold and really used to **** me off. Is this sorted on the 03.

4) Old model a bit slow at the top end, 03 any better?
5)Is the older shape Impeza and the WRX(with the prodrive kit) about even speed wise.
Any help would be great

Thanks for the replies,
Steve,
I think from about 95 the Impeza didn't much pull and used to run out of gas about 135.
I had trouble with Civic Type R in a stright drag up the motorway and could have done with more 'shove'
Dave
I like the idea of a fast 70-150 sprint
Any more takers?
