Try an adhesive/stain remover, available at most hardware stores... also WD40 works in some instances

I used some autoglym class cleaner (the blue liquid/cream) on some glass to remove sticky... dont know if will do something strange to the paint work.

Auto glym extra gloss protection (the liquid) (has petroleum distillate) liberally applied will disolve the adhesive residue with no damage.

Hot (but not boiling) water will also soften the adhesive and allow it to be wiped off in some cases.

For ultra quick but not so safe (unless Very careful) nail polish remover does the trick. Make sure you wax the area afterwards though!

CAVEAT - if you ruin your paintwork with nail polish remover, don't come whingeing to me.

Vegetable oil to remove the residue then an appropriate cleaner for the surface in order to clean off the oil.

Trust me, this is your best chance of shifting sticky residue without doing damage.

Ingredients

4 large potatoes, peeled
2 cubes chicken bouillon
2 (10 ounce) cans asparagus
1 tablespoon fennel seed
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper.
1 tablespoon fennel.

This works everytime.

Question

How long did you leave the WD40 on? I've never found a sticker residue it won't shift, given time. It'll even remove tar.

I spray the affected area, rub it in gently with fingertip, mainly to avoid runs, and leave it for time enough to make ,and drink a nice cuppa.
Then go back, and rub the residue off with paper towel.

Recently removed one of those TSL Vynil cut jobbies, to replace it with a different colour. It left some residue, but it all came off with gentle scratching with a fingernail, and a good polish after.

If it's the stuff that sticks the SUBARU letters on the boot then be prepared for a long battle.

It's like really thick double sided tape and I tried most of the above without success, WD40/Meths/Hairdryer/Label Remover/ etc.

I used brake/clutch cleaner and an old credit card in the end, but managed to put quite a few scratches in the soft paintwork.

Afterwards I just used some rubbing paste and repolished the whole boot and it looks fine now, but wouldn't bother doing it again.

Don't use White Sprit..... Use De Natured Alchol.. ie Meths!!! as it evapourates where as White Sprit can leave a greasy film.

3M Panel Cleaner. It's designed exactly for taking away stuff like that.

You can get from most auto paint suppliers.

Isopropyl alcohol is the Daddy at getting sticky label residue off stuff safely - just wet a cloth and wipe it off, you won't believe how easy - try and find some. You sometimes get little bottles in kits for cleaning cassette heads, keep an eye out at hardware stores or chemists also but I'm not sure. Would not want nail varnish remover (acetone) on my car - it will dissolve most dyes and paints

I used a spray can printer ink remover/cleaner and a bit of scrubing with a sponge, then washed with plenty of water, did the job nice, no paint problems.

try Eucalyptus oil! It was recommended to me to take the glue from packing tape off the seat of my motorbike. Haven't tried it but is easy to come by, not expensive and def not damage your paint.

Petrol/ white spirit/ Meths, one of those should do it without bothering the paint finish.

Would also be VERY wary of using nail varnish remover. Acetone eats more than certain large people on planes.
