Do modded cars sell???
#1
Hi all,
I have a myo1 WRX, with some nice external mods ie sills, spoiler and lights and also a full exhaust decat and panel filter.
The thing is, at the moment, most of what I have done is reversible ie I could strip the entire exhaust off and put the old one on, put the boggo filter in and the car would be back to standard all bar the external mods which i think do the car justice so wouldnt want to put back.
So, the next step I figure is an ecutek remap, probably make me good for 280 bhp
However, as a fickle sod Im likely to sell the car in a years time, and seeing as returning the ecutek remap back to standard would be a total waste Ill be at the point where Ill be wanting to sell the car as a going concern ie with decat, remap etc etc still on it.
So, do these kind of cars sell? is there a market for them. There seem to be plenty in the forsale section, but I always wonder how well they do and whether the owners are happy with what they get for their pride and joys.
So any experiences would be appreciated on this, thanks
Andy

I went to look at part-exing my scoob and the guy told me straight away that he wanted everything as it stood and NOT to put it back to standard otherwise it would reduce the part-ex value. This was a high performance car specialist though. Shame really but I thought he would want it standard. I didnt deal in the end and decided to keep it but I was really suprised. Mind due its not really OTT. Just wheels, lights, gauges, PP (not a PPP I think he wanted it for his own demo car ), filter and exhaust.
Every mod I have done easily reverseable and I still have all he parts. You will find the parts are probably worth more second hand though. I totalled mine up and reckoned I could get at least 1,500-2000 for the bits alone including the PP. I think he probably added a grand on mine for the extras at most, so becareful.

Think you'll find it'll sell, Ive been looking at buying a scob recently knowing they are in my price bracket bt Ive always been put f scoobs because they are common as muck BUT its always nice to see 1 with a big spoiler n exhaust anything else is a bonus, I wouldnt own 1 with 1 of them poxy spoilers on so if/when I come to buy 1 I would probably b looking for 1 with these subtle mods done to them. I think you'll find alot of people think the same.
the only modded cars that dont sell for example would be a lowered aloys exhaust rubbish on a renault 5 campus, stuff like that is best left standard to sell onto grannies. cars like yours will alwasy sell witht hem type of mods

Most things will sell, just maybe not for as much as you might want, or might get for a std. Dunno. This is another lame justification I use to keep my car std when I get the modding-itch and can't afford any more debt...

Cosmetic modded cars look crap for the most part, smack of trying to hard and put off "normal" car buyers.
A zorst/decat, PIAA's and rempap/ecu change is all a scoob really needs to fulfill most if tis potential. Standard cars look better, UK cars sell better and are easier to get parts/service for.
As I've said elsewhere in 5yrs all the modded ones will be undesireable and any one who really wants an Impreza will be looking for one with orange indicators, no colour coding etc etc. Thats been the pattern in the motor industry for as long as its existed.
Proof of what I'm saying is to be found in the fast ford market, look at the values for say a Cossie that is pretty much standard then look at the value for the modded version, the original will always be more desireable.

I would expect the insurance premium to be the biggest hurdle. A prospective buyer would almost certainly be confident they can insure an Impreza by getting a quote.......go back and reveal the mods and they will probably charge obscene amounts to cover a modified car, assuming they will deal with a modded car anyway.

I would say modded cars don't sell as well as standard ones, as people think you have been ragging it/tracking it.

If it's an Impreza Turbo, it's gonna have been thrashed regardless of whether it's got mods or not. You have no way of knowing if the person has warmed the car up before a good 'spirited' drive or not. If someone expects to buy one of these that hasn't been driven hard at some time, they're living in cloud cuckoo land.
A friend of a friend has a 4yr old Impreza that's only done about 6,000miles. He only uses it at weekends, but every single one of the 6,000miles has been at warp factor 10. Sure, it's well looked after and has a full service history, but it's been driven as it was designed too.
They way I would look at it depends on the mods. Different types of mods will introduce more (or different) stresses on the car. If someone had bigger brakes and decent suspension, I'd see that as a good thing. If it was Superchipped, I'd run like the wind

I think this is the only time I'll ever agree with old man Lewis.
There was a Terzo on here a few months back. Seller wanted £10.5k for it.
Got a value from a friendly dealer who said it'd be worth a max of £8.5k but they called their contacts at Subaru and told them about the mods on it. Subaru simply said "It's worth about £5000 don't touch it". They weren't telling me that to try and persuade me to buy from them as they didn't have any Terzos available anyway.
The seller wasn't impressed when I told him I he was asking twice what Subaru valued it at!
Personally to get one that is a bit different I'd go for one that only has the PPP upgrade.

if you dont like dont buy if people want to mod let them each to their own as said before you can have a standard one thats been thrashed and one with mods that been treated like the queen just cos you have mods dont mean u thrash it it's just nice to know they are there if you want more from the car and as for chipping i dont see a problem if it's done right same as anything done by a cowboy then anything you have done will be crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think anyone would be careful of buying one with a non PPP ecu upgarde - primarily because you lose the warranty and also the reliability factor. I reckon a full decat is enough, 240bhp, (250 according to Mr Croney!) easy enough to reverse, and most dealers don't mind when it comes to warranty issues.

add up the price of some of the tasteful mods & it really makes no sense at all not to buy a well-modded car. most scoob owner who have expensively modded their cars are unlikely to thrash the **** out of them as they treat their cars better then their women,

To be honest, from talking to the local traders, you'll have more trouble selling it if it's green! Apparently no-one wants a green Impreza.
If you're likely to be selling then a nice sounding dump valve and exhaust system (to impress the boy racers) and a air filter is about as far as the traders I spoke to recommend.

Funny how nobody buys a modded car but 99% of the greys imports that come in have 5" exhaust system.
Also the guys who wouldnt touch modded cars :
"I am a newbie and I have just brought an impreza, how do I make it go quick, what chip, whats the best, exhaust, air filter, dump valve, brakes, wheels"
Traders maybe scared of modded cars because most have not got a clue about imprezas.
If you intend modding your car, keep the bits and put them back on when you sell, best of both worlds.

I had no problems selling my previous modded cars for the price I wanted although it's really down to the individual's viewpoint.....
garages are a waste of time though.
