Question

Been using the MX5 this week as the weather has been so good.

Off on holiday tomorrow, so start the Impreza up and try to move her - handbrake jammed on SOLID on the Offside!!!

Now, this happened about 2 weeks ago and I thought it was just a one off ................. but NOW AGAIN!!!???

Eventually it makes a big bang and releases after rocking the car back and forwards ................... how does the handbrake work? Is it a pair of shoes acting on the INSIDE of the disc hub? OR does it compress the pads on??

Also, my brake pads are now on the 37,000 mile marker - I didnt think they lasted that long???????

Pete

I thought the handbrake controlled shoes behind the discs. I've never really looked closely at them though - mine still work...

s for brake life - they'll last a long time if you're careful with them and don't brake hard all the time.

How are you finding the MX5? - I looked at a trilogy special edition a couple of weeks ago, it was a bit more than I was looking to spend for a second car but well loaded with toys and they always look good in black...

Uk Tony, thanks - I wonder if it was the discs stuck actually - rather than the handbrake? Because, last weekend I jet washed the car and didnt move it afterwards - maybe a coating of rust between brake pad and disc?? maybe?

It was stuck FAST however!!

Everyone knows (except you, 'cause yer stupid) that you have to dry the brakes after washing the car otherwise they go rusty real quick and stick on

I take the car around the 'block' and drag the brakes a little to warm 'em up and take the rust off.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to have kids let alone cars

(or is that the other way around)

Question

Floyd, surely that would apply to ALL the brakes then?? The only brake stuck was my offside rear!! so, your idea kinda falls off a cliff??!!

However, not a bad attempt on your part - not bad for an axe murderer I mean!!

Pete

I heard that brake pad technology followed right behind improvements in the composites that clutch plates are made of. Whereas clutches used to go on cars years ago, now its much less common (?) These days its normal for your pads to outlast the discs. I used to have a polo and the front discs went at 24k way b4 the pads!

Thumbs up

Your right the handbrake is drum type They do lock up harder when on a hill. A sort of anti roll back, the more pressure put on the brake shoes the more they bind up

If you have washed it, and then leave it on a slight incline they tend to not come off, there is no natural heat generation created in the handbrake drum therefore doesn't dry it out. Unless loads of hairpins ( No hair dresser jokes please ) try after letting handbrake off, driving forward slighty first then reversing

Tony,

An attempt at a sensible answer to a P. Lewis post
