Caravan advise

Thinking of buying a caravan that I can tow with the RB5. What is the maximum weight I can tow according to the law, and is this to much to pull and stop ?
Would I be best with a twin axle as I want a big one, that I can get all my 4 daughters in, if needed ?
Are Scoobies stable when towing ? My Sierra 2 ltr Ghia was fine that I had a few years ago, but a little dodgy on the motorway.
Anyone know of a good second hand place local to Bristol ?
Thanks Phill

and an RB5 n'all!
You've GOT to be kidding!!!!!!!!!!! Do that and we shall send the scooby gang round with orders to shoot on sight!!!!![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Seriously thou, althou an RB5 or any scooby for that matter could handle a caravan, I saw one on my way from portsmouth to chichester a few sundays back pulling a caravan...
(If it was you, I was in the green MY96 that flew past!! When I saw it from behind i thought 'not another ****ing caravan!!! and then I saw the scooby pulling it and though, ok, for having a decent car i'll let him off)
...but they are high performance cars and the grunt is in the upper rev range, not the best for towing a caravan, and if you going for a large one you want something with alot of grunt low down, say like 2k - 3.5k revs!

No I serious here lads. I don't want to have another car just to tow a caravan, so want one that'll go on the car and tow well.
Any thoughts ?
Phill

Have you thought of a static caravan Phill, then you could rent out and make a bit of cash to help towards cost. I think I know of one for sale around the New Forrest area

I would seriously recommend you get a good long test drive.
I have found the scooby is a crap tow car for car trailer and other heavy stuff. There just isn't the torque and it's really jurkey.
(never towed a caravan though)

I remember someone else saying don't tow with a P1, isn't there a sticker inside the door shut ? Bit like the sticker on my car that states the tyre pressure for 16 inch wheels
There no sticker on mine ??
The other thing is my car has 244 Lb torque according to Powerstation, so surely that'll be fine for towing ?

it depends on where that 244lb of torque is, if it's 5-7k rpm then it's a little to high in the rev range, if it's low down, say 2-4k rpm then thats a beaut for towing,
Say you had a car that generated 500lb of torque at 7,500rpm, but only 50lb torque at 2k rpm, that would be like pulling away in an old nova with caravan on the back, not going to go very far! but for sheer speed and 0-6 performance thats a beaut
But say you had 500lb of torque at 2k rpm, that would have no trouble pulling away with even the heaviest of caravans! but 0-60 and sheer speed are sacrificed for that brute force so low down the rev range.
Thats why it is not recomended to tow with a high performance sportscar!
Like if you were to tow a caravan with a mclaren F1, you'd put enormous strain on the engine and probably end up wheel spinning all the way to 30mph and have no tyres left :P

In my manual it states that my MY98 turbo can tow up to 980kg.
That means a small to medium caravan.
A twin axle is a definate no-no

You should never tow more weight that the weight of the tow vehicle. If something unforseen happens, the caravan will end up towing the car

Power wise its ok, but keep the weight in mind.
Good luck

I got a Subaru tow bar (detachable one) that funnily enough came off a RB5 WRSport (thanks M18use
)
So a twin axle is a no no then? And I limited to the weight of the car
That'll be a small one then ![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)

PS Car pulling 248 BHP @ 6200 RPM and 244 Lb torque @ 4600 RPM as measured at Powerstation![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)

the power of the car car is'nt that much of an issue. its the weight.
the max gross weight of the caravan must be less than the kerb weight of the car. as said above you don`t want the caravan to towing the car![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
look out for a Lunar dealer in your yellow pages as they tend to be quite light weight for there size. aluminum chasie(sp)![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
i remember when i used to work on carvans and had a customer who towed a small Lunar with a renalt clio![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
