Taking MY03 WRX in for 1000 mile service tomorrow.

Under medium to hard acceleration I hear a 'fluttering' or fast ticking sound - the sort of noise a strip of paper stuck to a wheel might make in the wind. Sorry - thats the best way I could describe it - and no - there isn't paper stuck to the wheel!!!

Anyone else got this or should I ask dealer to look at it?

I *think* you could be talking about the wastegate. I've notiecd a fluttering on mine, and the only thing I can think of is that I'm hearing the wastegate because the rest of the car's so ****ing quiet

Yeah I get exactly the same thing, between 2500-3500 ish rpm? no idea what it is. Went for it's first sevice last Saturday and seemed to have dissapeared (typical as I had a mechanic sat next to me as I'd expressed concern at the noise my new car was making and like you had difficulty describing it!) but it's definitely back now, will be taking it back to the dealer soon as I can. Please let me know if they can tell you what it is on your service.

Ian I have had the same noise on my WRX 03with PPP fitted i thought it was heat shield on the exhaust dealer had a look on first service but found nothing amiss, must be a characteristic of the car.

Sounds like the boost actuator to me. You should only hear the
wastegate if the car is fully de-catted. my 98 cars suffered from a noisy actuater.

I got this on my MY02 for the first few hundred miles. Seemed to clear up after then (presumably as the induction pathways get grimed up )

I think this is normal. It happens on mine too. I think it's the wastegate as described in other threads.

Thinking about it, you're probably right - it's probably the boost control solenoid that is audible. Whatever, I'm guessing that it's to do with boost control.

I could hear the same sorta thing on my MY00 with a decatted downpipe... Don't think it's anything to worry about, but do mention it in passing to your dealer. After all, you've shelled out the best part of 20 grand so you need to be happy in your own mind

Got the same noise on my MY03. Its worse when its cold than when warm. Took the mechanic out for a drive when I had the 1000 mile service and he thought it couldve been a number of things but to be honest it was so faint then that it was hard to hear.

With so many other cars doing it this has set my mind at ease somewhat though. The cars getting PPP'd within 6 months anyway (once I've got the money!) and I will see what its like after that but generally I'm not too concerned as its not just me

I also have MY03 WRX (Std) with the same noise. I have had mechanic sit in with me and have been told it is the boost control solenoid. It's sometimes very noticable but nothing to worry about. I have been told they will replace the solenoid valve but it may make the same noise. I was just glad to hear it wasn't anything to worry about !!!

I've (sorta) learned to live with it. I thought it was heatshield rattle as described in many other threads but when I took it (MY02 STi7) in for it's 10K Km service I told the mechanic about it. He tightened everything he could find hooked up to the turbo but it didn't make any difference. Mine is quite loud and only occurs when I boot it and the tubo kicks in. I'd rather it didn't make that sound tho' (14,000km on the clock now).

I had been thinking over the last couple of weeks that the car wasn't as powerful as it used to be and was wondering if the two were related....then I jumped in my wife's 1.4 SX Fiesta and it felt like it had no power at all! Guess I must just be getting used to the car.

I think it is the wastegate myself. This is my 6th Turbo car and only my classic didn't make this sound. (1st 4 turbos were Lancia's)

If you turn up the stereo, you can't hear any fluttering!

Sorted out my boost problem by turning off the aircon

Nothing to report on the turbo whistle, seems like it's a case of like it or lump it

Common fix is to leave the car in the garage and catch the bus.

Aye I still have the sound on mine but tbh I hardly notice it now. Seems slightly better since I had the PPP done but it didnt really bother me in the first place.

Took a MY03 PPP for a test drive yesterday (Mainland Widnes). Thought I could kill two birds with one stone and feel what the upgrade was like and see if I could hear that fluttering noise which i still hear on mine. Guess what... aside the fact it was a little louder with different back box I could still make out that fluttering rattle sound.

I think its safe to say this must be a feature on this car.

Just need to find £1600 for the upgrade now :-)

Thumbs up

I had my turbo replaced at 1500 miles due to the noise and huge loss of power. Still hear it occasionally on the new one but not as loud. Do any of you find it seems louder when you have high walls / fences at the side of you for the sound to deflect.
