I got 24,600miles out of my last Michelin Pilot Sports - the internet rates them as the BEST performance tyre EVER - who am I to argue!!
The Goodyears have a Treadwear rating of what?? 120? the Michelins have a treadwear rating of 220!! So, after - say 10,000miles your Goodyears are sh4gged out - the Michelins will go another 10,000miles easy.
THEREFORE, the Goodyears need to be half the price, which they are not AND YOU get to suffer on Goodyear F1's while I swan around on the Best Tyre in the world!!
I think my logic stacks up pretty smartly!!!

I have my first MOT next Tuesday - the two front tyres have worn down on the edges, BUT, they have loads of tread over the middle 3/4 of the tyre width.
Now, I am guessing that they are ok even if bald on the edge - for the MOT and legally - as long as they have 1.6mm at least over the central 3/4.
Am I right? or just mad? or deluded!!?

I'm no expert but I would consider replacements and while your there ask why this happened to your tyres, tracking? balancing? pressure? . I think there are markers on the tyre wall now to show when need replacing, hope this helps .

Well, apparently, they have worn like this because I have driven round lots of roundabouts!!
Also, I think I ran them a bit low on pressure for a few months!!
The offside tyres are worn on the inner edge, the nearside tyres are worn on the outside edge - front and rear - so, I suspect it isnt geometry or anything
As for being a cheapskate - there is LOADS of tread over MOST of the tyre .... and at about £100 a corner its a cost I would rather wait to fork out on thank you very much!!

IIRC correctly from looking this up a while ago, the law states
"No less than 2.0mm(or whatever the minimum is these days) over at least 75% of the tyre with no bald patches"
So you can get away with less than the minimum for 25% of the tyre but if you have any completely bald bits they'll fail.

The legal minimum tread for cars and light vehicles in the UK and EU is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre tread width and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
So, the tyres worn on the inside would be OK - but not the ones which are bald on the outside.
Just get new ones all round anyway....... it's just not worth the risk, to licence or life. Tyres are one area which I never compromise on.

Why is the inside different - we are talking 3/4 of width of tyre?? so, they 'could' be bald on BOTH inside AND outside and STILL be a pass?? surely?
Pete
I will still buy new ones - its just a question I would like answered!!

Inside wear on the off-side and outside wear on the near-side
Had this on mine - GEOMETRY!!!! It was way off on the front and rear. Especially the offside of the car - so much the bloke was convinced it had been in an accident and had been jigged (My family run a body repair shop- so he thought it was a customer's).
It's still not quite right (camber is a little off) - may need the offside lower arm replacing (its only done 35K).
So get the geometry checked and swap the tyres round too (PITA if ther're directionals - still have to do mine )

Pete , I'm in exactly the same boat (worn on the inside edges )and I guess it's best to get them replaced , will be looking at mytyres.co.uk as they seem to be good value and get good reviews here.

Even if they're strictly legal you will get earache for it if you're stopped and it will encourage them to find other things to nick you for. I speak from experience, but then that was in the Pug 106 when I wasn't too stressed about slightly knackered tyres as the overall performance was like limp lettuce - on the scoob I'd change them sharpish as you can't afford to be so chilled. Inside/outside problem very interesting tho - like to know the answer to that one myself.

Because Subaru have the understeer dialled in as a safety measure for inexperienced drivers

If it was that good why don't SUBARU set the cars up with the Bumpsteer??

According to the government the words of MrShades are correct but not the interpretation.

they just mean the entire circumference, i.e. no flatspots. The diagram clearly shows that the centre can be >1.6mm and either edge below 1.6mm.

I reckon I've got 4mm across the central 3/4 of the width of the tyre, so I am loathed to splash out on a new set, if not required.
Reading the blurb and law and MOT manual it would appear as if a car with a bald 1/8th (of the tyre width) on BOTH edges of the tyre is still legal and an MOT pass.
Be an interesting argument with the MOT man - as this is one area where it is NOT at his discretion!!

1st - get the geometry/tracking checked, something must be wrong. Then swop the wheels left to right (diagonally if you wish) so that any sidewall damage from kerbs doesn't get any worse. My forester eats the outer edges (tracking is OK), so I swop diagonally every so often, and also get the tryes flipped on the wheel so the inner edge becomes the outer edge and I get a lot more wear out of them. Kerbing is a major problem over here as the roads are so narrow, I can't read any of the writing on mine after 10k miles if I haven't flipped them on the wheels.

Well, gone and done it - Michelin Pilot Sports at £410 for 4
If these last 25,000 miles like the last set then I will be satisfied!!
