Another running in question...
#1
I took delivery of my STi 8 on Saturday and I have one question about the running in procedure.
When the manual states that you shouldn't keep the car at a constant RPM for any length of time, what do they mean by 'any length of time'? Could someone please quantify this?
I potentially have a long motorway journey ahead of me next week so I need to decide if I should find an alternative route!

Just keep varying the revs every few minutes ... 2500 - 4500 ish in 4th, 5th & 6th
Keep up an average motorway speed varying from say 60-90mph and you will be fine.
When you get back, you can get your 1k oil change done and start to have some fun

what it basically means is done sit a 3k rpm on a motorway for several hundred miles. as it will bed the engine wrong or something.
if you search through the forum for running in there is some really good technical stuff explaining why.
but I have a memory like a sieve and cant rememember anything much.

I would opt for the non-motorway route. It's not only the engine that you will be running in, the brakes, clutch, tyres, gearbox, etc., etc. will all benefit in the long run from gently being introduced to their function in life. Don't use anything aggressively and vary driving speeds etc. to let everything bed in gradually.

If your on the motorway sat at 3500rpm 75ish mph, just drop it into 2nd gear every now and again, just to loosen things up.......
dissclaimer.......never take any of Yozas advise

I had this problem with my STi8...
Just do as people suggest, and keep the revs changing every now and again.
Other motorists tend to think you're mad, as one minute you're doing 60mph in the left-hand lane, and the next it's knocked down a cog (or two) and up to 4000rpm for a quick session at 70, 80, 90 or even 100ish (in 6th) and you fly past 'em all. Only to slow down to 60 again a few miles later.
As has been said, try and exercise the transmission as much as the engine and change gear on the motorway as well as varying the revs. I didn't like to sit at the same speed/revs for much more than about 5 mins (as I tried to treat it as an A/B road journey and vary speed/gear as much as I would on A/B roads) - which gets to be hard work on a two hour journey, but hopefully worth the effort.
The Mrs didn't seem to appreciate what was going on either, just assumed I was 'pissing about again'
Just wait til after that service... it's great fun!
Enjoy!

Did most of my WRX PPP running in at the dead of night along an almost deserted A12 & A14.Felixstowe at 10pm is eerily quiet.
Also did a nice mixed bag run up & down to Norwich, plus a bit of g/box exercise posing round the town a bit during the day.
