wagon performance vs 4 dr??
#1
Is this a stupid question probably buts thats never stopped me, being a wagon convert, loving the practicality & the strange looks, but performance wise are they the same like for like to the 4 door, ie weight? is it heavier? if so how much? is it longer & does that affect the cornering & ride? I 'm guessing same running gear& lump? just curios as am planning to take my new wagon out on track & wonder if it will be able to cut it with the big boys?
Got a 96 UK with
Blitz Induction
Bailey Dump Valve
HKS 3in Downpipe
HKS Hiper 3in exhaust
Eibach suspension springs I guess ive got about 230/40 ish bhp? but will she handle captian?

The Wagons are well known for being able to cover ground much better and faster than the 4-door saloon, weight distribution see??
They dont have that stupid rear wing either so look less like a shopping trolley!!
They are much more use and less likely to get nicked and car-jacked!!
They are BETTER end of story, Subaru also think so - as I was charged an EXTRA £1000 to get a wagon!. The Extra performance I was told - BUT, don't tell the muppets in the saloons they said!!

50 kgs heavier than 4 door not really any slower, put it this way my standard 5 door MY97 keeps up with my mates 91 porsche 911 carrera 4 with modded ecu, green induction kit and cat removed. in 1st, 2nd and 3rd we are side by side, 4th he starts to pull away. but i can live with that cos i kill him round the twisty stuff.
standard carrera 4 0to62 is 5.4 seconds

Spec for Standard 03 WRX & Wagon (Subaru figures)
Overal length Same
Overal width Wagon 45mm less
Overal height Wagon 45mm more
Wheelbase Same
Track front Wagon 20mm less
Track rear Wagon 25mm less
Kerb weight Wagon 15kg more
Power Same (225PS @5600)
Torque Same (300nM @4000)
Max Speed Wagon 1mph slower
0-62mph Wagon 0.2 secs slower
Transmission/Gear ratios etc. Same
So the 03 Wagon at least is a little narrower,a little taller,a little heavier & a little slower than the 4 door.
But add PPP & then next on my list some 18's & lower it a tad & it's up there with the rest, only more stealthily.

I'm still a wagon fan but...
WHY WHY WHY did they have to fit the 03MY wagon with mis-matching rear light clusters - it stands out even more than the 01-02 !
Makes even less sense when the 03 saloon and all Legacies match up.

Theres not many cars around that can match the pace of my old engine, p20spd's, or Harveys..
All high powered wagons running over 340bhp..
I expect mine to soon be the most powerfull wagon in the uk.. sorry Harvey.. Mind you your new plan sounds good..

I'm another wagon running over 350bhp. It certainly surprises a few other car drivers when they see an "estate car" disappear off in to the sunset.
As for the handling, some say it's better, some don't, and I suppose it's all down to the individual concerned. I've done various mods to the handling of mine though, and it's definitely far better than it was before!

Having owned a MY99 Saloon from new, a MY00 Wagon for 1 month, and another MY00 for the last 16 months (had 80 miles on the clock when i bought it), i have had 2 years 6 months with a saloon and nearly 2 years with a Wagon, i can safely say that IMO i prefer the wagon.
When i had the saloon, i got stopped for checks on a very regular basis, too often IMO, fair enough it had the prodrive exterior kit, full decat, 17's, etc, it just became annoying. That could handle fairly well IMO.
With the Wagon, touch wood, i have not been stopped for checks yet!
For those that may or may not know my wagon, i think it is fairly subtle in its appearance, the black FMIC makes it almost unnoticable from a distance, the dog guard and bumper protector suggest Farm Yard truck, only when you actually look closely may you think, ahhh... what does this have?? by which time i have gone
Practicality wise, the wagon definately wins, i have had a 5' tall freezer in mine, easily, forgot i had it in infact. Also had a spare gearbox, spare fuel tank, and other gubbins. Great if you have kids, especially young ones, as all the crap can go in the boot, whilst the remain protected from the crap by the dog guard.
Granted mine is er.. er... modified, but even in standard form, i definately prefer the wagon for its subtlty(sp?), practicality and handling.
Nice to think i have one of the quicker wagons going, did not think i had, but as David says, i can only think of his and Harveys that are Wagons, and show more power than mine. No doubt, some people will correct me on that one.
Even in standard form, WAGONS RULE

wagons do most definitely rule!!
ask any of my fellow isle of wight jap car owners - they can verify !!
he he!
i like the fact that they retain some of the lost anonimity of the four door. still quite "Q" to the majority of the general public. which in my book, can only be a good thing!

yes yes yes, there's nowt wrong with a wagon. fast and furious, but anonymous. bit of a surprise in store for the triers (like the bmw 318ti that tried it on a few days ago - hah and double hah!)
boot on the 03 saloon looks piddly and useless (barely get a set of golf clubs in) so went for the wagon and not regretting it at all.
but then this is my first scooby so i'm bound to be "as happy as a frenchman who lives next door to a brothel".
