What are your criteria?
Do you want 2 doors, 4 doors, or 5 doors. Does it need to be a family car? Will you ever need to carry a lot of kit in it? Do you care about extras such as air conditioning? Which shape do you prefer? Is insurance cost a big issue? Would you prefer big bhp from scratch, or would you prefer to get a car with less power and spend some time and money modding it? Would you want to take it on track?

I think you might have asked too many questions then.Got me thinking now.
I spose with eleven bags of sand i would go for a 1996/8 turbo that's had some mods done, filter, back box, maybee some change for other bits.
It's everyones own opinion, find a car in your price band, make sure you like it then go for it.
Happy shopping

From: Bournemouth - 5x Ex Impreza owner. 997 GT3 CS.
11k would get you a T or V plate MY99 with good miles on it. The MY99 is a much better car than the previous years, phase 2 engine, better interior etc.
Go for a UK one. Then move to imports when your an experienced owner!

So you want to buy a scoob for 11k?
That will probably get you an sti 3 or the likes (ie an MY97 car) but then you have to add the extra cost of fuel (super unleaded only) and octane booster (as these cars have very little margain for error in the ecu as they are designed to run 100-102 ron fuel).
You also have to look into how much one of these cars costs to run (we are talking 2 services per year, one being around 100 quid the other being anything upto and beyond 400 depending what needs doing).
Insurance will kill you if your under 30 (even if your over 30 it will kill you ) and the likes of tyres need to be purchased in 4's (as they wear out pretty much at the same time).
Take a longer indepth look at why you want the car (and not just for the performance) as you may be shocked at how expensive they are to run (especially on a budget).

Tony, dont be such a damp squib!
We should be welcoming the guy into Impreza ownwrship, not talking him out of it!!!
If he buys it and runs it for say a year, and realises it is too dear, at least he can get rid, and he'll be able to say he owned a Scoob. Everyone should at least once in their life IMHO.
Allow people to make their mistakes and enjoy life, you could be knocked down by a bus tomorrow!
Listen to Dark Blue Marks advice and get a MY99-MY00 at around your budget and enjoy!
In a couple of years you can get a Jap one if you still have the urge.
P.S.
Turboman, where the hell can you gey a decent Type R for £11k?
Or is this just another case of BBS posters manipulating Scooby prices to the detriment of all us owners?

Talizman,
yup, im being a damp squib and no doubt hes also after a JDM car (thus the reason i pointed out the sti v3 ) which was in that bracket
But people also need to be aware that with these cars come the hidden costs of running them, i really doubt that owning a scoob and then seeing it rot on the road/path/in the garage due to lack of funds will bring any joy
Also the average ammout of cash that the average impreza driver spends per year is around 5k (fuel/tax/insurance etc) and thats for insurance under 1k and 12k per year miles of driving (plus servicing etc).
You have to consider that there is a difference between being able to buy the car and then being able to run it (otherwise id be driving a 911 turbo now )

Activeuk,
The above points all hold water, very sound advice.
OR
you could click here and see what 10k got me....
just a thought. also, my insurance is £850 fully comp protected with class 1 business use and I get a fuel card from work so ive got to cough up 1 to 2 bags of sand a year to keep it serviced properly.
Buy one, buy a MY99 uk, enjoy it, look after it and re evaluate after 12 mths, another point about buying MY99 is that the horrific depreciation is almost over and its a bit more stable at 3 years old. IMHO.
Do you smoke?
£35 a week saved is just a thought

Ignore my annoying enthusiasm, I bought and drove it home yesterday and its my first. I deliberated like you for ages and found the right car at the right price, the jap specs are superior in some ways, and inferior in others.
I chose UK because it suited me and NO ONE ELSE.
