There you go....thats why I bought the P1. Not many cars on the road that can touch these cars, also there is the price thingy....Don't you just love it when that happens

Regards

Was it a 993 or 996? My mate has the 993 version ans I haven't yet gone up against it in my standard STi8 - just wandering if I should get the PPP done before I do

That almost reads like a Mills and boon novel!

PS I'm guessing having never read a Mills and Boon

Cool

"30 odd with 2 kids" Try 58 odd and chasing a Maserati Merak - ok so not Porker territory but my 99my was standard at the time and my son was in the car. All very naughty but a great buzz!

Sounds like fun, ya should have kept going and done him round the corner!

Thats the whole reason why I love having a 350+ bhp Impreza wagon, there is hardly anything out there that can beat me but everything gives it a go! I even had some prat in a Nova 1.4 SR try it the other night! Talk about being an optimist!

Cool

I was lucky enough to have a go in a new 996 Targa the other day and it was the best driving experience of my life.
The E36 M3 I had before my 03 WRX didn't even come close to the experience of driving the Porsche - the feedback from the steering, the brakes, the feel of the clutch and the fluidity of the gearbox were all perfect!

Good to hear that an STI can keep a porker honest - but if you had the money - which would you rather drive???

Excellent!
However, someone always moans about posts like these so I'll save them the bother:
1) How irresponsible
2) Only race on a track
3) You could have killed someone etc

There, now I'll get back to the point, great read, Bear in mind the turbo body cars are slower and was it the new 315bhp car?
If it was a few years old, I'm not surprised but if it was one of the new ones, then I'm impressed!

I had a bit of a run against my friends 996 carrera4 a while back. My girlfriend was actually passenger in the porker at the time, hood down.

My Sti5 V-lim was WAY quicker, i was changing at 6k to avoid ending up in his boot.

2 points

1. My girlfriend shrugged her shoulders and said "So what? Its still a porsche and yours isn't )

2. He sold it a month later and is awaiting deliovery of a turbo (he assures me theres no connection tho - yeah right )

Nice car but drove it afterwards and it was dull as dishwater, too grown up for me i guess!

Interesting story. Point is theres more to a cars appeal than straight performance - and the 320bhp carrera s has plenty of performance. I used to have a evo 7 with around 350bhp which I traded for a 993 turbo with around 430bhp. The porker is such a different car - quicker - considerably - but more of a handful. I got trouced by a caterham the other day down a back round- but |I still consider the porker to be a far more appealing car. a lot of cars can whip 911s in perfomance stakes but as a package I believe they are unbeatable as a road car.

I now have a narrow bodied Varioram 993 C4. It has 285 bhp (plus a Fabspeed sports Exhaust) and makes a lovely noise, but I have got to admit it is not earth shatteringly quick like my now sold R34 (420BHP) Skyline was in every gear. However, the overall package and feedback are wonderful in the 911 and that is why I bought it.
I did have an EVO 5 and remember it as being quick at least in the first 4 gears but it ws so harsh, I kept it for only 2 months.
This 911 is my 4th(after a 17 year absence as my family grew up).
I still do not think that thre is anything to compare overall, but as I sy not super quick to the ton.

Had 3 imprezas and have also been fortunate enough too have been leant a 993 Carrera 4 and been in a 996 carrera driven hard.

The Subarus are great fun, but if money was no object it would be a porker every time - for me anyway

The P1 had no problem staying with Carreras, and did so on a regular basis…. Looking forward to running in the STI8 and getting the PPP and doing the so again...

I had 25 minutes of fun up the A1 with an 02 plate Carrera 2 a few months ago. Nothing in it between the cars but its a drive I will remember all of my life

This weekend I met a F355 Spider Challenge on the M25. It crawled past, roof down, looking stunning. I immediately pulled out behind. I knew he was going for it as he accelerated, changed down and then accelerated with all it had. The howl was incredible and the exhaust gave four little puffs of fuel as he changed just before the limiter, but I must admit I was dissapointed as he didn't gain a single inch on us up to an alarmingly high speed. The best bit was his bitch was glued to the wing mirror throughout, obviously after being told to "watch this". How embarrassing

Someone told me Ferraris rarely make the book figures but its strangely dissapointing that Porsches and Ferraris have little or, most often, nothing on our cars.

I would still have one though.

In fairness I think you may also find it the case that lots of cars we consider inferior don't actually lose that much ground to our Subarus in the real world.

While we may gloat when we keep up with more expensive machinery it is important to bear in mind that this doesn't tell the whole story and our cars are also about having fun. Just as we have fun and enjoy our Subarus so there are others getting equal enjoyment from their cars, be they more or less expensive.

I think what the small differences between a wide range of cars does highlight is marketing hype and magazine reviews :-)

Late model 250bhp Volvo T5's are quick in gear......If it wasn't for the Scooby Sport full system and superior cornering of the Scoob I wouldn't have been able to pass him. Good thing was he was an old dude who gave me a friendly wave. He'd been up for the challenge for miles, I just restrained myself knowing the roads wern't suitable.

I love a challenge like this. Makes driving fun.

Just my penny's worth, and I know its not a scooby, but I managed to keep up with a 996 Carrera 2 (less transmission loss than the C4) between 80-120mph the other day in my Pulsar (300bhp Unichiped)...it happened twice....so I know he was trying. I was in 5th on both occasions and stuck to his bumper..and it did surprise me after all I've heard about these cars.

I have no doubt he would of started to pull away above this but didn't get the chance. Gives great pleasure knowing how much more his car is but couldn't get a little hot hatch away from his mirror.

I can understand people feeling proud that their little hot hatch that has been chipped up etc (and about to go bang in 6 months time) can keep up with some serious exotica but I think you're missing the point somewhat. The point is this :-

He can afford to own/drive a £40k porsche and you can drive £2.5k car with £1k mods. Speed definitely isn't everything..........

What people actually fail to see is that magazine and factory figures are just numbers.

You can hardly notice a second or two on the road between 2 cars but on paper you'd have this terrible feeling of one being 2 secs slower to say 100 mph.

Throw in a missed or slow gear change or even just a slower take up due to not being ready and the picture looks quite different.

Unless a car is vastly quicker, then it will always look like something can keep up with something else but the magazines say it shouldn't.
