Cool

(Don’t read unless you want to spoil the surprise on Sunday!!)

Went along to watch the next episode of Top Gear being filmed yesterday and one of the features luckily happened to be the EVO 8 Vs the STI 8, as I was a bit worried that they may have some sort of MPV special
Anyway after JC had taken them on his usual trip around the country roads and through the twisty’s we finally get back to the track where the stig could give them a good blast around the track….
First out was the STI looking very fast and stable through the corners only disrupted by a little under steer and the slight bit of off roading that the stig did, but overall a good run so was anticipating a good time
Now the Evo’s turn, straight away you can see the difference in the handling (most likely helped by the AYC) the Evo seemed so much neater through the bends with little or no understeer and by the first sector the Evo was a second quicker… So what were the final times??
Well as expected the Evo was quicker with a time of 1min 28.9secs
The Subaru following closely with a time of 1min 30.1secs

But even though the Evo was quicker (On the track) all the presenters and myself would still prefer to drive away the Subaru Theres just somthing about the Subaru you just have to love!

Do you know if this was a PPP'd STI and an EVO FQ300? Or were they standard?

So the cars compared were very similar in price and performance!

I guess I shouldn't mention that there will be an ECU upgrade for the FQ300 (due out in the Autumn) for minimal money (less than Ł500 ) which will again push it's performance beyond a PPP STI!!

what tyres on the cars? that can easily tip the performance in favour of one or other.

I've never seen a test where a UK STI beats the equivalent Evo around a track. Who cares? Not me, I'm on my 5th Scoob.
Chucky
PS If you do want an excuse then yeah, the Evo comes with super-sticky tyres...

Here we go, We've not had an evo/Scoob debate for, oh at least 2 days.

Choosing between an Evo and an Impreza is the motoring equivilent of choosing between Everton and Liverpool. I.e the right choice is the one your most comfortable with, and which 'team' you have the most loyalty to.

For me, The evo was too compromised, faster when driven by a good track driver(not me) sure, but day to day harder work to live with and drive. For someone else, that compromise is less of an important factor so the Evo wins.

They are two sides of the same coin.

Tony, thats the whole point, most of the "X is better than Y" brigade, haven't driven either, and aren't likely to, not that makes there opinion any less valid, everybody is entitled to an opinion, just think yourself lucky that you've had the opportunity to exercise yours.

Funny you should say harder to live with day to day, but I don't find that what so ever. I had my UK Scooby for 1.5 years and have had my Evo VI for 1.5 years and the only thing I find harder to live with is having to fill it up more often.

Other than that, with Eibach springs on I didn't find the ride any harder than the Scoob and I should know about bumps, after all look at where I live.

Again, like what's been said earlier, it's horses for coarses. I bought the Evo cos I was fed up of doing track days and being passed only by Evos and bloody high power Scoobs.

Really wanted an EVO, I went, I saw, I didnt buy, I went home .

I am certain that an extreme would have eaten my RA for breakfast but have you seen the price . As far as teh rest of the range the RS is the only one that would interest me but I like my creature comforts . FQ300 229bhp/ton my RA 225bhp/ton so an FQ300 is better but some how 4bhp its not going to feel radically quicker . Plus I am sure the RA has lower transmission losses and a shorter set of ratio . Havent driven an FQ300 but I cant see it being much quicker and quite possibly slower .

chris.

The figures don't mean anything. It's how it drives.

The evo is far less "laggy" than a scoob and much more responsive off boost. The brakes are better, the turn in is better in fact I don't know anything that the scooby has over the evo except for the "sound" ..YAWN

Oh yeh, forgot that the evo is the daddy when it comes to turning heads Scoobs lost that years ago

IMHO every scooby owner is a closet evo lover. It's just that

a) They can't afford one
b) The wife/GF won't allow it
c) They are too impractical...YAWN

And before I get flamed, I had a MY96 (when they had street cred), MY98 and STI5.

I have just sold my impreza for a EVO7 RSII, and got to say that the evo is with out doubt the faster car. The impreza is a bloody fast car that can easily be used as a every day car, but it ain't an EVO!!

So the Evo lapped quicker, but the 3 broadcasters all went for the Scooby.Sure the Evo is a good car but most Evo owners don't compare level cars, ie. Evo V1 Tommy Mak. V UK spec turbo, not a P1 or Rb5 ppp. I think an Evo V111 can be compared to a n sti8 ppp, but then people put an Fq300 in the equation and not an ra TYPE c. ( I hope this makes sense ). I bought an sti8 and never considered an Evo maybe I should have but I very happy.

Oh great another evo vs scooby debate.................If you cant beat em join em.

At least the scooby aint in the garage every 6000 miles for a service.

But really, you gotta show evo drivers respect, except for the yellow ones!
