On my MY00 the ashtray on the centre console makes all sorts of noises when the car has been left in the sun.

Not whilst sitting still but when driving - it rattles and squeaks like mad until it cools down.

Am I alone?

Easily sorted! buy some Defi gauges and fit the control unit in place of the ashtray

No - you are not alone!! mine also rattled (hot or cold!).
take it out, and if you look up at the top of its 'socket' you
will see a couple of screws - quick tighten and shud cure
