PPP MY01 vs MY03

Appologies if, this is a common question, I did do a search honest!
But why does the MY03 PPP deliver so much more power than the MY01 PPP? I thought there were only a few exhaust tweaks made by Subaru, so why can Prodrive suddenly safely eak out more power? Can I get a something done to my MY01 PPP to bring it closer to a MY03 and still keep my warantee?

As far as I know, the PPP ecu on the MY01 is a pretty crude device that fools the turbo into providing more boost than it thinks it is. As such, there are safety limitations on how far you can push this.
The MY03 PPP remaps the existing ecu, which is fully aware of how much boost it is supplying & so can be mapped to provide more power safely.
I am pretty sure it is a standard map given to all cars with PPP. People like Scoobysport can give your car an individual map & therefore push the power parameters further with safety.
I am sure someone more teckie minded can give a better explanation

Your F***ED,
I have already been down this route with the technical director at IM Group as I had the PPP in December 2002, just before the MY03 was coming out.
Very conveniently, they advise that MY01/02 PPP ECU is the "best technology" for the cars of that type and that if you were to fit the MY03 it wouldn't work.
Considering the engine is pretty much unaltered (other than set up to run on 98 RON) I think this is bo***cks, but they have given me this statement in writing.
Clearly, if IM admitted the MY01/02 PPP ECU wasn't as good as the new one (ECUTEK ?!) and they were selling the old one close to the release fo the new version, then they would have problems with a lot of customers.
Very convenient that it "won't work" eh !!

A certain person at Prodrive told me my 02 WRX would have just about STi7 power if the PPP was fitted. It was and it seems to, as I've had no probs keeping up with two "7"s. I'm happy. ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Here in South Africa they punt the 03 to have a 9.0 to 1 compression ratio as opposed to the 8.0 to 1 of the 01/02. Whats the story elsewhere ? See Aussie specs (our is the same) at: http://subaru.com.au/explore/impreza/specifications.asp?item=11586

Guys,
Ive driven both my MY01 WRX PPP and the MY03 WRX PPP and can categoricaly state that there is pretty much no difference in the "feel" of how quick you are accelerating. I was not gobsmacked like i was having driven a P1 and my car back to back - that was a big jump![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
There is no massive drop off of performance as some say between the two.
Two years of development of the car = more BHP - it happens to all cars - not just impreza's.
