On my way home from a couple of Scooby shops today I was comming of off a roundabout and guess what popped up in front of me. A spanking new M3 with 19" Alloys on it.

I could tell my the look i got in his reaer view mirror he was up for it and away he went. Except he did'nt get away, in fact I was gaining, not by alot but I was gaining.

We then came to another roundabout and this M3 with its big 19"s was like a lumbering giant, bloody awfull, he would not get out the way at this point, but the discussion between him and his passenger was fantastic to watch.

Always wanted to get one over on an M3. Now I have and I am happy my car is performing as it should.

See this week's Autocar. M3 is one of the first to get booted out of their B road feature.

There again, they didn't even have a Scoob there - just an Evo 8 Extreme

If I still had my E46 M3 I reckon it would be more of a match for you
And I would be working harder than you in your scoob too!!!

I went to Silverstone GP circuit on wed with goldtrack and my boss in his new M3. The only time the M3 was pulling slightly more than my sti8 was on the long straights - more to do with the gearbox ratios than anything I believe. Also, his tyres and brakes are costing him nearly 3 times what mine would - haha.

As for the journay home down the back roads....well, he wouldnt get out of the way and I was just cruising

M3 needs to be driven properly to get the best from it (as any rwd car) and alot of people cant do this or dont want to do this to there very exspensive cars

Talking

but the discussion between him and his passenger was fantastic to watch
I can imagine:

Driver: so did you see the football last night, a real shame that Cameroon player died!
Passenger: yeah, that was pretty shocking, I watched the game live on the telly with a few beers
Driver: just shows you can be any age and......wait........ha...there's one of those subaru's behind and I think he's trying to race us.
Passenger: Looks like a new STI judging by the black hole (scoop) in the front.
Driver: do you think I should floor it and loose him
Passenger: Nah, leave him to it.

Wideboy, I have a question for you? You'll happily expect a driver of a 50k M3 to play with your 25k (at most) scooby yet you'll not entertain the idea of having a similar run with a 12.5k hot-hatch. Hope you see my point Provided its safe I'll play with a transit van if I feel he want to see the difference (perverse as that would be )

Eh? The Driver of the M3 was about 28 - 30

And I have hot hatches try to burn me all the time. The difference is I know I can waste them every day of the week.

Hehe, your on Drugs.

Assuming your STI8 is standard it is about the same 0-100 as my car and when I played with a very mildly modified Clio Cup (about 8-10bhp over standard) I couldn't do anything other than match its acceleration until 4th gear. Supercharged vts's can go past my car like it was stood still above 60mph - need I go on I'm glad the M3 driver played back which was IMHO good of him but you really owe a little more respect to the fact that there are a LOT of standard hatches that can easily keep up with scoobys in most situations and that not everyone driving them is a spotty ned!

I'll probably be going back to hot-hatchdom does that mean I'll suddenly not be eligable to play with scoobys?

That excuse is getting quite boring now.
I can't believe that a new M3 with 350ish bhp would struggle to shake off a STi if driven properly.
Perhaps he wasn't trying, the same as me when I get a Golf GTi trying it on.

I think you missed the PPP bit saxoboy. An Sti8 with ppp should do 0-100 in about 12.5 secs an M3 is not much quicker, so on normal roads I can imagine the Scoob easily keeping up with the M3.

Ah, still - in my opinion the M3 would still be fractionally faster just as the STI8 PPP would be fractionally faster than my car

I had a play with one from the A2 to the tunnel, a couple of weeks ago. I marginally had the edge, but he was two up.

I don't know much about them, aren't they a bit heavy?

jeeees.....everbody seems to take a swipe at Scoobs if they ever beat anything.

I think Clarkson summed it up when comparing STi8 PPP and Evo8 FQ300 on Top Gear recently, along the lines of "nothing could keep up with these cars on Britains roads".

they both then went on to whip almost every other car tested on TopGears track (911 Turbos, Ferraris etc) - Evo8 beating STi on track, STi preferred on the road.

same track, same driver, same effort.

Some guy recently posted on here he beat a Ferrari in his STi8 on a track day, and he almost got slaughtered by some of the responses.

when will owners of other cars accept this?

My RA is rated as 12.9 to 100 and has nearly 20bhp per ton more than an STI PPP. I would think you are looking at 13.5 at least.

I fully accept how good a car the scooby is but straight-line motorway dragging really aren't its thing and thats where M3s and powerful RWD car tend to show the scooby what that sort of racing is all about

Andy, thats my point exactly. I was'nt trying to big myself up, I was just saying what happened. like it or not.

I really could not give 2 hoots about what a Saxo did against a Scoob. I was simply letting you know that the beemer was slower.

The 0-100 on a STi 8 ppp is 12.2 BTW the 0-60 is 4.5, the 50 - 70 in 4t is 3.0s.

The BMW 0-60 is 5.3 and 50 - 70 in 4th is 5.3s, could not find 0-100 but based on the 50 - 70 I rekon the scoobs should be faster than the beemer.

ChrisP - Prodrive rate the STi8 PPP as 12.2 to 100 - most car mags have achieved that, some even thinking this is beatable!

presumably the closer ratios of the 6 speed box even this up!

I'm not having a go at all cupraman just suggesting he maybe wasn't at full chat - could have been shifting early, etc. I've seen low 11s quoted for the 0-100 of the M3 and if you consider the STI time is derived with a mad-for-it 4wd launch you'll appreciate the M3 comes good with traction

I chased an E46 M3 down a slip-road once when I had the VTS and no car has ever left me like that!! From the split second we floored it he started to pull and pull and pull and I was never beaten by a scooby like that, not even at Crail when they launched. When driven correctly above 40mph the M3 in my experience would beat most scoobys.

I'd be very chuffed if I can a) get a M3 driver to bite and b) keep up, but for all my modifications I expect an M3 to stretch its legs on my car quite easily. That's life as they say

RA 223bhp/ton
STI PPP 207bhp/ton

Gearing wise my 5th ratio is about the same as a UK turbo 4th. On the RR 103mph in 4th was 7,600rpm.

Anyone got an STI 8 graphs showing speed against rpm in 4th ?

Im with Cupraman on this.

Chrisp, dont forget the STi is 6 speed box, hence the closer ratios?

Yep but you dont use 5th and 6th to get to 100 and as I posted it will only just squeeze 100 in 4th. Can an STI 8 do 100 in 4th if it can then the ratios are long, yes ?. The RA has the shortest ratios of any impreza. My RA runs 19.7mph @ 1000rpm in 5th.
