Talking

i wish mine had been that cheap
Echo what John's saying

That's pennies mate......

Wait till you need a new ..... *takes deep breath* gearbox, engine, clutch, discs all round, front pads (x 3), back pads, handbrake pads, wheel bearings x 2, handbrake cable, 3 Maf sensors, 2 lambda probes, 4 Toyos, 4 Bridgestone SO3's, 4 Goodyear F1'S...

Then there's mods

Downpipe, bumpsteer, geometry, colour coding, headlight protectors, PIAA lamps, Knocklink, AFR meter, Boost Gauge, Dawes,. Radar detector....

Oh and then there's the 90,000 service that I try to forget coupled with another 2 services and fuel and octane booster and and and ....................

That's in the last year and I'd prefer if no smart sod added it up

Can give you exact figures for my UK MY98 turbo 2000 Wagon :

Length of Ownership 16 months
Mileage at purchase 50,477 miles
Total Miles covered 17560
Fuel cost £2,429.80 (13.84p/mile)
(Average economy on 95RON 24.4 mpg)
Insurance £1,235.00 (7.03p/mile)
Road Tax £320.00 (1.82p/mile)
Servicing £627.07 (3.57p/mile)
Spares, Repairs, bits and pieces £250.40 (1.43p/mile)

Total £4,862.27 (27.69p/mile)

This obviously makes no account of depreciation, which adds about a further 50p/mile last time I looked.

I like to keep track, but I try not to worry about it. If I worried about it I wouldn't have one. At the end of the day I excepted that it was going to be expensive to run, but it's worth it (still) and at the moment it is a toy I can offord. Day may come when I won't be able to and I'll be sad to see it go.

Also, by comparison the wifes 306 1.6 petrol estate costs 9.9p/mile over the last 9 months/12,000 miles but then it hasn't had a service.....which is every 20,000 miles, and no doubt that will bump up the costs a bit.

Hi all,

Like a muppet Ive added up my running costs for the year, let me say it has made me think twice about ownership.

Please note the figures are approx, but pretty accurate in most cases, and also based on my own circumstances - but I think they give a good idea of whats involved.

ouch!!

This is something I sooo didn't want to see on Scoobynet....

I had my Scooby for nearly three years and I remember spending shedloads on its upkeep. Petrol was definately the most obvious cost (1st name terms with all local Shell employees).

At least you're honest!

Thumbs down

Do this little exercise on ANY car running costs ..... bet you'll be surprised. Cars ALWAYS cost more to run and maintain than most owners are aware of.

Depreciation is usually the biggest motoring cost. I'm doing a little experiment at the moment running a second car. By buying well at auction, running a car for 3 months between service intervals and then selling the car privately, I believe that, petrol aside, I can achieve free motoring. I'll spill the beans when a year is up. Keeps the miles off the Scoob too.

Why do a lot of people talk about keeping the miles off their car?
I bought mine to drive, wether its the daily commute to work, a blast down my favourite roads when i have nothing better to do or general running around with the family, i enjoy it! ... and whenever i am out in my wifes car i always wish i was in the Scoob instead.
Why worry about putting miles on the car, it is still going to be as fun to drive with 50,000 on the clock as with 25,000 .... as for the extra depreciation well, i'm not limiting myself so the next owner can have a low milage car.

Agree with you Gary. When I am in my other cars (classic Triumphs) I wish I was driving the Scoob. From my point of view, modding was the killer! One of the Triumphs is a heavily modified Dolomite Sprint, which I have had for 25 years. It did not cost that much more to run till I started modding it. Now I'm in the same position with the Scoob. The poor old Triumphs have now become the "I'll drive this today because of where I am going to have to park it" options with the Scoob being the first choice where I can park safely. The high(er) running costs are mostly down to the mods. Just one of things if you like making "improvements".

Mines running costs over the last year have easily been worse than that You've only had two smallish services! I've done about the same miles but using SUL 79p/l and now OB as well. I've had a big service (400) and two small ones (200) four tyres (350) two sets of front pads (130x2), front disks (150) and thats without properly thinking about it or factoring all the other stuff

I read SN for 3-4 months before I bought mine, thus I knew what to expect in regards ownership costs.

Mods are personal choice. I said I wouldn't mod mine, but I have - and want more! That can be fixed by removing SN from your favourites

At the end of the day, when you are are driving it do you really care? I don't. When the garage door opens I am like this When it starts up and I here the boxer through the full decat I am like this When she warms up and I start to press on a bit, with no particular place to go, I am like this When I put it away afterwards I am like this Then I get back in the house with her all tuicked up safe in the garage, get a cup of tea and sit down looking like this

Tell me you don't and I believe it is time for you to get rid of it

Why do you think most of us have a 2nd car for the miles?

Running costs are part and parcel - although the petrol can be hard to take. I visit Shell every 3-4 days, bung it in with OB and away you go.

Its all worth it when that Porsche in your rearview mirror with the blonde bird in the passenger seat giving the driver grief. Thank you Subaru

Keeping the miles off one`s Subaru is obviously dividing opinion. Yes, I'd love to do every mile of motoring I can in it but I will never be able to afford to replace it so the less miles I do in it the more years I will have it. Also, the type of "miles" I wish to keep off it are those short journeys where the traffic is heavy, the speed limit 30 and the parking liable to inflict dings in the door etc.

I'm sure we've all bought Imprezas to drive but just owning an Impreza brings pleasure too.

Work out just how much you've spent over the last year going out for a good drink every week. And all you've done is literally pi$$ed it all away

Sure, the Scooby is expensive to run but I enjoy it and more importantly I can afford it without having it impact on my lifestyle.

If t got to the stage where I couldn't afford to do things because of the car, it would go at the drop of a hat. I used to be bothered about putting miles on the car, but as Gary said it's there to be driven and enjoyed.

Petrol and servicing are the biggies for me. Petrol I can deal with but two services a year (more if you do more than 15k miles a year on a classic) really takes the biscuit. Tyres dont last too long either.

Its bloody annoying when you put £40 worth of petrol in and 250 miles later (3 days this week) your back at the petrol station filling up again.

That said I never get bored of driving it even to tescos. Just a pity Im turning all sensible and want to buy a house so the scoob has gotta go

Simon.
