If your talking about the same MY's i.e. up to MY00 then there will be no real difference.

Both have the same engine and box, as for the weight difference, its not really worth debating. They are pretty much the same.

Your looking at around 4.3 to 60mph.

As for the M3, its no contest. that was the first car I played about with when I got my TypeR. Although it has the power on paper, it can't put it down like the TypeR/A's can. The gear ratios bog it down too.......watch out once you get to the 140mph mark though, as the M3 will be quicker here. The TypeR/A's are coming close to their top speed due to the short ratio boxes.

*edited to say, I didn't read the original post correctly. Didn't see the (not STI) part.

Just as a point of view when i shipped my STI5 Type R on the bill of laden the weight showed as 1194kgs that was with a half tank of petrol.

Assuming that they would have a pretty accurate weighing system as for shipping reasons, i wouldn't have thought that a RA would be that much lighter or quicker (not saying it isn't but not by much).

I was told by the subaru dealer in CYPRUS where i bought the car from that with the weight of the RA it could only be given as true if bought in original RA spec.
Such as no electrics, no air con, no stereo, no speakers, even the front LSD is a factory option and not standard equipment, etc etc...

The STI all had uprated internals over the WRX and thats what gave you the extra rpm 8250rpm as oppossed to 7500rpm.
Also the STI (Type R\RA) had DCCD which most WRX don't (i say most as with subaru who knows)

Anyway Mad Gypsy which ever one you go for (if you thinking of buying) they are both stonking motors and you will not be dissapointed with either of them.

Bring it orn TON3

The RA is lighter, so in theory it'll have a slight edge on the R

Question

I thought the WRX RA did not have a STI engine? If the RA is just as fast or faster, why bother making a STI engine if you can get so much out of the standard one?

Cool

I thought some of the internals were different i.e pistons etc?
I'll bow to your superior knowledge, but I'm sure that is the case.

the WRX STi Type RA and the WRX Type RA are diferent specs. The WRX version has a 7500rpm limit and 280PS, the WRX STi version has a 7900rpm limit and 300PS.

The WRX STi Type R has the same 300PS engine as the WRX STi TypeRA, but it has an open front diff, the TypeRA has a front LSD. The Type R is heavier.

So on traction and acceleration the RA in either form will be faster, at the top end either STi will be faster than the non STi version.

STI R v WRX RA

MY00 V6 wise the sti is listed as having the same power (JDM agreement but its thought the STI has close to 300PS rather than 280PS but both sold as 280PS) but STI is sold having about 11lb/ft more torque (260lb/ft apposed to 249lb/ft) IIRC.

The STI has a higher red line 8000rpm ?? the RA definitely has a 7,500rpm redline (I know I have one

The STI engine does indeed have uprated internals and a red top manifold.

My old STi2 RA also has a 7500rpm redline

The STi Type R should be a quicker car than the WRX RA, although my old WRX RA was blindingly quick.

You would think that the Type R would be quicker considering the superior internals and the 500 extra revs. I would have thought this would offset the difference in weight.
BTW what is the weight difference between a two door RA and Type R?

Having said about the redline, the redline is 7,500 but I have it on good info that the limiter is 8250rpm on my WRX RA. My car has all the electrics, air con etc etc and the 19.7mph/1000rpm 5th gear ratio on the SVA paperwork its kerbweight is listed as 1240kgs. I should image a stripped out RA with keep fit windows would be around the 1200kgs mark if not lower.

the rev counter isnt acurate on these cars. The STi rev limiter is at 8050rpm, thats 8350rpm on the tacho. I would think your rev limiter is 7900rpm area chris even though the tacho reads higher. Have you taken it to the limiter in 3rd to see?

Me personally no I havent, I was only told recently by a fellow scoobynetter with a WRX RA LTD MY00 (i.e. same series as mine) that they had and it had cut at 8250. Dont know how high mine has been but even when I am pushing on I very rarely exceed 7,000rpm and certainly dont exceed 7,500rpm. Everything gets a little frantic after about 3,000rpm on WOT in gears 1 to 3, as you know so I tend to short shift at 6,500-7,000 (if you can call that short shifting LOL). On the RR they had 103mph at 7,600rpm in 4th. Max power on mine in 4th (according to the RR figures) is at 6,600.

The really shame is if it had a 6th cog it would make a superb machine a real stormer.

John,
You need a second car to keep the miles down in your scoob but i liked that v6 that Pete has in, cant afford it right now though as contracting has its limitations (and i think he has someone pondering over it still) but its a lovely car (and so's your V5 type RA LTD )
