I thought it was something to do with the bellhousing

38000miles MY97, 2nd clutch, 2nd engine. And still judders Ahh well, only does it when I drive like an old fart, so it keeps me driving it like it should

Talking

I took my scoob to the Main dealers today for an answer on the 'clutch judder' that a few of us have been experiencing. They explained that most scooby impreza's do it when cold and that it is an unfortunate 'feature' with them. So theres nowt to worry about peeps. Again, maybe its just one of those things that makes the car as individual and unique as it is!! My mind can rest, thank god!!!

I queried it with my main dealer, he said a 3 year old car with 18,500 miles shouldn't have any judder, so he replaced it & the flywheel under warranty (only had 2 weeks left)!

Maybe if the cars nearly new you have a point tim, but mines a MY97 with 50k on the clock, the main engine man at the garage went into great detail explaining about the boxter engine and the ins and out of the flywheel flexing and only becoming a true form when it gets hot etc, and how its so common with scoobs in general, he sounded legit and from what ive heard from other owners it seems v common.

It's quite simple

Some scoobies judder more than others for a given mileage. Once they start to judder, ALL will get worse over time. The only way to stop the judder is a new or skimmed flywheel and then you wait 25-50k miles for it to happen again...

Who cares? I love my scooby....

I've just had a clutch replacement. Powerstation fitted a Helix clutch which is not cheap but should last a long time. It has a positive pick-up compared with the old one (worn to limits) and the take-up has improved as it has become run-in. It certainly grips instantly and I am very pleased so far.

I had a little judder initially but that has almost gone now with a bit of use. I dont hammer the clutch anyway. I think the judder is caused by a bit of torsional elasticity in the drive train and drive shafts and it "bounces" a bit as the clutch takes up if the give in the drive is resonant to the clutch as it starts to grip. I am surprised at that bloke talking about boxer engines and flywheels. Sounds like a bit of "guff" to me, the flywheel is hardly flexible believe me. The only other cause could be torsional vibrations in the crankshaft, but I doubt that too.

I had two clutchs under warranty in 33,000 miles.

The judder occurrs because the material used on the face of the clutch is not up to the job.

Simple as that.

Any garage which tells you it is a "feature" is just taking the pi55!
