I've got a MY94 STI which theoretically starts with 240 ps. I replaced the turbo back exhaust with the Power Engineering T75 SS system including the backbox. This has siamesed downpipe for the waste gate, no cat and a sports free flow cat in the centre pipe. The exhaust is not loud but pleasantly indicates that the engine is something special . The boost went up such that I fitted a Dawes to reduce the boost to 1.05 bar, just below fuel cut. I have also recently fitted ported headers and an H&S up-pipe which speeds the spool up of the TD05 turbo. The car is certainly powerful but I can't say how much since it has not been on the rollers. PE claim that the free flow cat will flow up to 400 BHP if you wish but the MOT emissions test is a "breeze" with the car further inside the limits then most other cars. The AFR indicator shows no problems either as does the Knocklink. I have heat wrapped the headers,up-pipe, and downpipe to reduce underbonnet temperatures and this also reduces the noise in the car.

I prefer to remain less noticeable, and this all seems to work.

Forgot to mention the K&N panel air filter!

Les

Well this is my first post so go easy on me please guys.
I recently replaced my highly modified (though stock looking) 106 GTI with a lovely RB5 - justified to the g/f on practicality grounds of course

Now nice though the car is I wouldn't mind adding a little more punch to the 217 bhp (it's not got the optional Prodrive pack fitted) but without getting to the rather unruly state that my Pug reached in it's final state of tune.
I realise that there are fairly big gains to be had with aftermarket exhausts if wisely chosen though I am worried about excessive noise.
I have also seen a couple of places (Graham Goode being one of them) advertising remaps for the standard ecu as a superior alternative to piggyback ecus or replacement ecus - what are the pros and cons of these and what can you guys actually recommend based on good/bad experiences?
Also what's the deal with panel filters vs induction kits as although the standard induction route *looks* awfully restrictive I have actually read some positive comments about simply dropping in a replacement element in preference to fitting a full induction kit.
I realise there is more b.s spoken about bhp than practically any other aspect of tuning but I'd probably be happy with a reliable increase of maybe 30/40 bhp but without the car giving the game away too much by being loud about it - is this unrealistic do you think ?

Any advice greatly appreciated and sorry for so many questions.

A friend of mine has the non PPP RB5 too,

Fitting a k&n panel filter, de-cat down pipe, decat centre section, funky backbox (scoobysport/blitz etc) and an ECUTEK (3 I think) remap took him to circa 270bhp (RR @ STAR - Really hot day - pulling like a dog - only boosting at 15psi that day... usualy sits around 18/19psi, so power should be more)
He's also put samco's around the intercooler (too help with the extra boost) and a boost guage in.

Fitting the exhaust system + panel filter made a huge differance.
The ECUTEK was another huge boost too.

The best place to start really is zorst/airfilter then chip.

Those power gains suitable for you?

i have the exact same motor as yourself 217bhp, but a have fitted a full de-cat stainless steel exhaust from revolution(their own make), dump valve(don't know what make, as it was already fitted to the car when i bought it) and blitz induction kit. now i had a centre diff replaced on it a while back by the lads at drive subaru and wullie the technician who done the work on my car said "it was well fast" and derek mc crae the salesman who i took for a quick spin in it said "it would well keep up with the new sti's"! both comments coming from guy's who get into turbo's every day, this ment a lot to me, but i have still not got it on the rollers. but going by the immpression i have received i think it's pushing out about 280-290bhp. hope that helps.

Wink

A classic with 260bhp would keep up with a new STi
First of all, the brakes...... these desperately need sorting out as they are not very good for a high performance car (and lets forget replacement disc/pad combos, we are talking about BIGGER discs here )
Forget the induction kit/airfilter (unless its the STi one), more hassle 90% of the time as the MAF sensors are very sensitive on the MY99 onwards and could lead to engine failure (even those safe ones, unless you get a link ecu in which case you can help yourself )
A tek ecu could be your best way (along with an exhaust) but watch your insurance go up though the roof if you do so (as most insurance co's will pummle you for the privilege )

There are 215bhp in standard form and even a full exhaust and filter wont get you 280bhp, 240-250 if you are lucky. Dump valve do nothing for power as they only work when you lift off .

Hi,

good to see another new RB5 owner

I have a non WR RB5 which has just been r/roaded @ Power engineering, the results were 255bhp @ 6325rpm and 246lb/ft torque.

I have had a HKS Super dragger exhaust centre section and backbox and a HKS full open neck down pipe (full decat) along with a piperX cone air filter.

Another non WR RB5 owner had the standard d/p (with cat) but de cat centre section and scoobysport b/box, the results were 240bhp and 220lb/ft torque.

So u can see wot difference the exhaust systems makes compared to standard and with the increase with doing the downpipe also.

Another RB5 owner has full decat with Tek2 ECU remap and r/r showed 288bhp & 276lb/ft torque.

However, with these power gains I would strongly advise uprating your brakes at the same time!!!!

see the RB5 Owners Club site for info and check out the forum for more info on power/brakes etc.

Mark

p.s. dont forget to register your RB5's on the official registry

RB5 286

Tut tut.

It was 286bhp-273ft/lbs torque. But yours did sound better.

217 bhp

The problem your now going to have is that after every mod your going to have to change your user name
217 bhp---238bhp---256bhp---269bhp---276bhp---286bhp---439bhp etc etc
