The car must be insured in it's own right. Therefore, although you can drive any car 3pty on your insurance, the car you are driving has to be insured itself. You will find that you are driving that car without insurance at the moment.

Question

I own a MY99 UK Turbo which is my only car and i have noticed recently that i do a hell of alot of "pottering" about in it ie. just popping to the village (2miles). Then here there and everywhere etc etc, all quite short distances. So there for alot of turning the car on and off, changing gear, car doesnt get chance to warm up properly.

Will this be doing any sort of damage to the engine, clutch, gearbox??

Maybe a stupid question, but i was just wondering?

Thanks for any advice.

ps. is it time to buy a 600quid XR2I runabout to run along side my Scoob???!

I noticed that it I do too much pottering, my clutch starts juddering

Also my fuel consumption is even worse than when I take it for a blast (like 20odd mpg instead of 24mpg)

But make sure you still serviced it at least every 6months.
As the oil is more likely to be contaminated as it never gets hot enough to boil off all the nasties that build up.

Take it for a good blast every couple of weeks should help prevent any build ups and keep the combustion chambers clean(ish)

As a note I use a rover 216gsi as my daily runner. But seeing it only does 25mpg I'm swapping for something a little more eco-friendly

Chill....

You own a mass produced car, not Shueys Ferrari, it was meant to potter down to the village, it was also meant to blast down the motorway.

It will do both dont worry.

I`m considering buying a cheap car to keep the scoob clean for the weekends and keep the miles down. You have to take out a seperate insurance policy and you have to start wil zero no claims which will make it a bit more expensive. Still debating the pros and cons.

Anyone else out there have 2 cars.

Sloaner,

I have a cheap second car which I drive on my scooby insurance. It covers me for third party only which is good enough.
Any caveats to this?

If you are the named owner on the V5 you must have seperate insurance on each, you can't drive on on the 3rd party any car part of your policy on the other.

Some co's will insure 2 cars on 1 policy - Liverpool Victoria do this. I would have done that but they won't cover me on a supra as I'm under 30. Therefore I'm taking the no claims of my Pug GTI runabout to use on the supra and my premium has only gone up by 96 quid until march. But both will be insured under their own policy.

I've got a van that I use for work and taking the dogs out etc, and me Scoob for days off and weekends. The wifes got her own company car that we use if we're taking the kid out going somewhere at night thats in a dodgy area. There are loads of cheap vans for sale and they come in very handy for all the above reasons and more! Insurance on vans needn't be expensive if third party etc ( mines £400 fully comp. but it is a new one)
Overall you just can't beat having a car and a van!

Jiggery Pokery - I'd check the small print if I were you - my 3rd party other car insurance definately only includes cars owned and insured by somebody else (that aren't hire cars)

So, you could drive your g/f's car home from the pub, and be covered 3P, but I would have thought that your second car is uninsured... Check it before you have an accident or get caught by those new cameras!

Ever thought about using a mountain bike??

Zero mpg
No insurance
Small service costs
Top speed depends on riders skill and fitness
No need for Dawes or Knocklink
No problems with MAF sensor or No 3 cylinder

Question

I'll check the insurance situation again. The car is off the road anyway, but I've been told over the phone on (at least) two seperate occasions that I was covered to drive it. I made it clear that I was the registered owner, and was left with no doubt that I was insured to drive it.
All conversations are recorded, so if they've made a booboo I won't be too happy (they can check the recordings on request).
