Question

I've had my 00MY uk turbo for about 6 months and I've run it exclusively on Optimax.
It occured to me recently that the previous owner might not have been so selective with his choice of fuel, so out ot curiosity, i reset the ecu.
I can't say that there was any real improvement in performance, but I now consistently get about 20 - 25 miles more out of a full tank of fuel.
Should this have happened?

not sure.

But higher octane fuel is associated with better fuel consumption.

It could be the timing did'nt re-advance itself to compensate for the fuel octane. But in my thoughts the ECU should be able to compensate for higher octane fuel as well as low octane fuel.

quite odd indeed!

I was always told that the ECU will cope with a decrease in fuel quality by adjusting the whatnots to avoid detting, but tended not to risk more detting to try and find out whether the fuel has improved, which makes sense.

Also told that if the reset improves things once then that's good, but if it improves again upon a subsequent reset after using good fuel, there's a problem to be sorted out with the sensors or summat.

Good. I haven't broken anything, then

Nick - I left the battery disconnected for a 2.5 hours, just to be sure. I'm told that 1.5 hours is enough
