Fuel economy is horrible on the scoob, even N/A..unless you really really want the impreza look I'd avoid it and get something more conventional...a nice Mondeo 1.8TD or the like.
Biggest prob may be piston slap on 1998 models (not that common but make sure the car ir started from dead cold as you can only hear it in that case)..otherwise FSH, HPI and treat it like buying any other car.

Don't buy a Mondeo 1.8 TD... absolutely horrible engine, it struggles to pull the car alone never mind towing. 82BHP and 178Nm torque are pathetic for a diesel, it has a useful power band of only 2000-3500 RPM and massive turbo lag. Very nice chassis for the type of car spoilt by the engine - the 2.0 16V has more torque.
Newer TDCi models are much better (130BHP and 330Nm torque) more economical and much nicer to drive. But they're out of your price range

PS Sorry if that was OT, I have no idea if a sport makes a good tow car cos I've never driven one and have never towed with my turbo impreza. The AWD system works nicely though so can only help when lugging 1000kg+ behind you.
