Exhaustingly hot !!
#1
I had my 1999 uk turbo in to the dealers for a major service today and asked them to look into a rattle in the engine bay (heat shield I thought) picked car up and I now have no heat shield "you can't repair them so we remove it, we do it on many vehicles". on returning home and checking (as you do) there seems to be a lot of heat rising from the front pipe and as there is a hose above this for either power steering or oil cooling I think I either need to fit the correct heat shield (£380) or wrap it with protective insulation, anyone know where I can purchase exhaust wrap ??.

I presume you mean the heat shields on the front exhaust headers. Yes there are some pipes around in that area and I don't think it is a good thing to get them as hot as they will get in this circumstance.
I have removed the heat shields on my car and have substituted heat wrap as you mention. This solves the problem. I think Demon Tweaks sells it. You will need about 15 metres of the 2" stuff and they also sell a special protective paint for it. Lot easier to do with the manifolds off the car.
