Anyone on here got a Spec C?
#1
Has anyone on here bought an STi Spec C, I'm tempted by one and wondered how it was to live with etc.
I currently have a modded MY93 WRX on lowered springs so not too worried about comfort and toys etc, but more interested in drivability, RPM on the motorway, fuel consumtion etc.

Notourious,
The gearing is exactly the same as the UK STi, they are around 1300kg in weight compared to the 1460kg's of the normal STi so it gives you a slight advantage
Usual stripped out parts (less sound deadening etc) and if your lucky you can get the a/c and electrics pack
I do know where there are a couple of MY01 Type C's for sale (under 17k)

Beautiful cars they are, I saw one at PowerStation last month, I believe it belonged to the Litchfield fella.
http://www.litimports.co.uk/subaru/stijapc.html not a bad price either considering the performance.

Iain, I did use the contact form on your website, but no answer yet
Weighing up the possibility of a Spec C 16" and spec-ing my own wheels and spoiler, got to be the performance bargain of the year.
Just need to convince MrsREV

John,
I understood the differences to be wheels, brakes, auto setting for the DCCD, no ABS and crappy interior. Sounds a bit like my current WRX
I was planning a brake upgrade too, but not from day 1, I'm just a cheapskate. I reckon I can fit the wheels and brakes I want and still be under the price of the 17" version. But then again I may just cave and buy the Limited version just so I can tell people what car I have: [deep breath]Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type RA Spec C Limited[phew]

Just to point out that the MY03 JDM's contrary to what Tony Burns above says do have different gearing to UK spec cars.
From the list of ratio's I have the JDM has a shorter 5th and 6th gear, other than that they are the same. In Japan you are limited to 112mph and so you would want UK's gearing lol!
Having a shorter fifth also makes for some quite manic acceleration
Damian.

You missed out the "8" so it'll be:
[Very Deep Breath]:
Subaru Impreza WRX STi"8" Type RA Spec C Limited,
.... and then of course you pass out as I did when I first had a go, anything else to add Iain before I pick mine up in September - want to make sure I'm saying the whole thing properly when I tell the Evo guy's I'm getting rid and what I'm getting rid for

Thanks for the mail Iain!
Tony, spill the beans on those earlier Spec C's too
I'm now in a heart vs head battle, I'll drive myself insane. I'd been planning on buying a Skyline for the last couple of months and suddenly this thing crept up on me
EDIT: bugger, Tony was bean spilling while I typed slowly I don't suppose you could mail me the whereabouts of this beastie could you?

Spen,
show me the list of the 5th and 6th gearing, as if you say, they have different ratio's (which afaik they do not, and as these are designed for rallying they dont have a restriction over the normal sti, and as many are exported, a restriction of 112mph is irelevant, plus if you ask John F what the original gear ratio was in his sti5 type RA Ltd, it may show you the light ).
Just look at the video on Iain's site, and tell me if that car has shorter ratio's (if you see how long it takes to get into 6th you may well wonder ) but then again, 8 min 12 secs around the ring is pretty quick in any standard car

Gary,
You want to check out www.litimports.co.uk, the 17inch version is the one to go for really, it is a little more than your uk sti8 though, but more power out of the box and ligher, but with less toys on it standard (noisier etc due to lack of sound deadening material).

Tony,
Managed to find the info, me being a simpleton the ratio's can be found on www.subaru.co.uk for UK spec and www.subaru.co.jp.
So here they are;
Gear U.K. STi J.D.M. STi's
1st 3.636 3.636
2nd 2.375 2.375
3rd 1.761 1.761
4th 1.346 1.346
5th 0.971 1.062
6th 0.756 0.842
Rev 3.545 3.545
Final Drive Ratio 3.900 3.900
If you don't accept these figures then they are in bold on the official Subaru websites mentioned above. For the Jap site you need to put it through a translator to be able to read it.
I used http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr to translate from Japanese to English.
Have a look at the JDM STi's through the translator and you will realise that the UK spec STi is a pi$$ poor spec compared with the JDM's, which is why I went for a JDM.
Damian.

hi gang
a friend of mine has a spec"c"
he brought it round to compare it to my uk sti8
it was the same colour...... wrb
the cars looked the same apart from the spec "c"
not having the orange wedge in the headlights
the spec "c" had a silver wedge which looked better
inside the dash lights are red.....which again i
thought looked better........
interior looked the same as mine
apart from the dccd switch by the handbrake
i havent drove the spec "c" yet but will be
doing so soon....
the car only had a couple of hundred miles on the clock
so he couldnt tell me if it was better than mine
(i had taken him out in mine previously)
no doubt it will be with those extra horses
mine has been ppp'd
only one problem.......since my friend got the spec "c"
he hasnt drove it much.......due to the really hard suspension
he has pulled something in his back......
so he has gone back to driving his aston martin vantage
(it's a hard life..but someones got to do it!!!)

From: Throwing myself down a mountain at every opportunity...
The spec c basically has all the trick bits you would want to fit to an STI eight already fitted...
Twin scroll turbo
equal length manifold headers
DCCD
beefy ARB's
Solid drop links (actually extend the wheelbase length slightly)
huge weight saving
If I hadn't already invested as much as I have in my current car, I would undoubtedly buy one of these. Bear in mind once you buy an STI eight, you then need PPP, then you need to sort out the suspension and dial out the understeer. And even then, you are still driving a very heavy car. That's almost the same as everybody elses STI eight.
It is a no-brainer really.
