hello,

im just new to the impreza scene. I am hopefully going to be purchasing a sti 4 type r in a couple of months.

i just have a couple of questions to ask.

Can anybody give me some real figues for this car such as time 0-60 runs and 1/4 mile runs. Im looking for real world times not from a magazine.

Also what power do they really run standard?

how easy would it be to tune one to around 330-350hp?

and would it still be reliable.

Last question, do you think this is a good choice of car?

all feed back would be appriciated.

cheers

own a v4 type r.

get more info and read up on www.sidc.co.uk and www.iwoc.co.uk

should find ample info.

re sprint times, it depends on how much u want to trash the car. havent been on 1/4 mile but trashing the clutch would give abt 4.6sec 0-60 (did this time in mine at 2002 trax - induction kit and full race exhaust)

quick enough as it is, with the mods stated above, got 328 at PE last year. not sure abt going to 350 tho due to the gear ratio of the car.

mine was quick enough on track due to mods to handling, brakes and suspension.

hope this helps

yeah that info was very usefull.

Thing i noticed about the rations is that they are short but due to the fact the car revs to 8000rpm it sort of makes up for the short ratios. i.e you can still do 60mph in 2nd etc.

so you have 328bhp with a exhaust and induction kit.

That is pretty impressive. if you had to guess at a quatermile time what would you say?

cheers

dont dare to guess mate, or i'll be burnt by those on this bbs

but less than 15secs?

yeah ratios are short but dont even think of revving to 8k limit or u'll be needing a new engine.

email me if u need any more info

i dont uinderstand why a manufacturer could have a redline on a car if you were not ment to ge any where near it. if this was the case wouldnt the redline be 7000rpm?

anyway thanks for the info

I have an STi4 engine in my car. Mapper has set redline to 7,000. No point in taking engine past 6750 to be honest as there isn't anything to be gained.

ok,

so if you take it to 7000rpm in 2nd gear will this reach 60mph due to the short ratio box in the type r? As surely if it doesnt this would equate to a slow 0-60 time due to 2 gear changes.

cheers

Don't think so, but what does it matter anyway?

i was just curious. Thinking about the 0-60 times. You would never reach a sub 5 second to 60 if you had to change gear twice.

surely this drmatically reduces the performance of the car?

Yes the Type R will do 60 in second. 0-60's are below 5 seconds for a Type R (depending on how harsh you want to be on the clutch etc).

I used to regularly take my Type R to the redline and it love'd it. It should be fine as long as you service it regularly (every 6000 miles or sooner) and you let the car warm up and cool down properly when giving it some stick. You will also need to use optimax or superunleaded and octane booster to try to ensure that the engine doesn't det (not good) especially if you are planning to take the car to 8000rpm. Either that or you need to get the car re-mapped for UK fuel as they are designed to run on Jap fuel which is higher grade at 100 RON.

Only problem I found with the close ratios was that it was a bit of a pain on motorway journeys when cruisng at 70mph as in 5th gear you are already at about 4000rpm which can be a bit noisey\tiring. On the flip side the advantage of this is that 5th gear will still pull like a train well into 3 figures.

1/4 mile for standard car should be in the 13's

Apart from that I think it will be plenty quick enough for you. 276bhp out the factory and quite easily taken over 300bhp with a few choice mods.

[joke]finally some sense[/joke] :P

Detonation.

i currently drive an mr2 turbo. On this i have water/methanol injection fitted to reduce the chance of detonation. Would i benefit by keeping the kit when i sell teh mr2 and fit it to my type r? What power would it take to get a type r to run in the 12's down the quatermile?

cheers

STI5 Type R with just De-cat,Filter and AP clutch for those super launches get me 12.92s @106mph.

So basically not much more mods just on symphatic you are at the start.
