getting grief from a guy at work who owns an ST170

The old "Twisties" thing is a bit backward in this thread as "Twisties" is probably the ST170's Trump card. Through a series of B road bends a scoob would have real problems putting any distance between the two cars. The Focus also has a lot better steering feel than the scoob.
Upto 100mph from a standing start the Scoob would leave the ST. I know I've tried it. The ST170 is around 7 seconds slower to 100mph than a UK classic scoob.
The power/weight/transmission figures are interesting but don't tell the full story. The ST170 has a severe lack of midrange grunt something the scoob has plenty of. A ST170 driver has to thrash the engine like a loon to keep up with a Scoob driver making good progress. This shows itself up massively in normal driving, the scoob always feels a powerful car at 3000rpm you have loads of torque to surge you forward. In the ST170 at 3000rpm you have no more power/torque than a standard 2.0 Focus. It never feels quick unless you are doing more than 5000rpm at which point the engine is course and doesn't sound happy.
What does this mean? Well the Scoob is obviously quicker but the scoob is always a joy to drive quick but in the ST170 you soon tire of the experience and settle down to normal progress.

Chris.
Totaly agree with you. As I said in an earlier post if you are after a sporty warm hatch that is also comfortable and cheap to run then my choice would be an ST170.
As for the ST220 I haven't driven one yet but I use to own a 2.5V6 Mondeo so fully understand what you are saying.

Luckily my zetec has 12K on the clock and the only problem was a non functioning rear wash wipe jet. All fixed under warranty. I dont know about tinny no rattles in mine apart from the boot lock which I can hear occasionaly over rougher roads.
Last 4 tanks fulls have been 35mpg, 36mpg, 38mpg and 36mpg. Thats about 360 per fill up so not bad over 1500 (ish) miles and a 36mpg average. Thats mainly a daily commute of about 8 miles (one way) and a round town at weekends. To get 360 miles out of the scoob would require 2 fill ups .
Has a 51 fiesta before and had it 12 months no problems only got rid because I need something bigger. I have spent more on mods and servicing on the scoob than the fiesta cost me new . Lost 1500 on the fiesta when I part ex it which I didnt think was too bad.

he paid £16,100 (fords web site)for a car that does 0-60 in 8.2secs the corsa sri does it in 8 secs and costs £12,635 (vauxhall web site)thats £3465 less
for £15,500 he could have bourght a 12 months old bug eye wrx and got a truely cool car now he just owns a jazzed up 2.0l rep mob
ffs you can choose a diesel engine you can't get a oil burning scooby.
also if his ford crap is so good why don't ford use it as the base for the rally car? well subaru use our cars as the base for a world rally championship winning car.
tell him to go back being a tea boy and let the grown ups do some work muppet.

Take him for a spin in your car on a private road, say no more. Ask him afterwards if he would like to take you out in his for comparison
Don't get drawn in, stay aloof, let the car do the talking.

oh and it needs a turbo to help it along
Doesn't the ST170 have a lady-boy-light-pressure turbo itself??
Just tell him to put his money where his mouth is, and organise yourself a bit of 1/4 mile action. (Helps if you look like Vin Diesel, tho)

No, the ST170 is a normally aspirated breathed upon version of a 2.0 130ish BHP Zetec. In all but straight line performance a nice car IMHO, more a warm hatch by modern standards.

Well I feel pretty qualified in replying to this, as I used to own one (I work for ford so get em cheap!!)
Nice enough car, and handles suprisingly well. But in a straight line it's a bag of ****!!
I sold it after 9 months for my scoob (standard uk my00). And the scoob kicks ***
Even in standard form it feels much much quicker.
Tell him to go f**k himself!!!
PS definitely no turbo on it by the way

Test drove an ST170 and a mondeo ST220 before i bought my scoob last year and they were both sh!te, especially the ST170. The focus should`ve had the ST220 engine and the mondeo should`ve had a 300bhp engine

I have a Focus and an scoob . The Focus is a good car, the doors shut properly, nice interior, 40mpg great standard sound system and cheap to insure.
Most of the comment from people who owned ford 15 years ago I guess. Its scarey how good these cars are. Mondeo ST220 easily as quick as a new age WRX, in fact quicker when moving and has more toys.

The fact that he picked YOU out to mention it to, and that you didn't feel the need to find someone to go 'I've got a scooby' to says it all...
I'm sure its a very nice two wheel drive, small family car with a mildly warm engine, all wrapped up in a GHIA'esc dress
Pity its rally brother is a one off and not developed from the road car....
Mark
PS _ I'd ignore him - probably frustrated at having to drive the car his family said was 'a nice colour !'

Had a ST170 on demo for three months, Broke down twice.
The AA man said it sounded like it needed a new engine, though the bottom end had gone but i was just a normal sound for a ford.
In the end needed a new ECU.
Was fun to race around but did n't come close to the scoob.

Oh yes.
I test drove several cars before deciding on the Scooby, and the ST170 was a gutless, uninspiring, common excuse for a car. I also drove the RS, and that was worse becuse it got so hyped by the salesman I was expecting something useful. Not a chance. Even if you wear slippers, smoke a pipe and need a kip in the afternoon every day, get a GX Legacy!!!
ford focus??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Steve.

I travel in and sometimes drive an ST170 two to three times a week.
First of all Fords are built well now days, build quality is good. Modern Fords are top of the game when it comes to handling. The ST170 handles and rides very well but can sometimes run out of suspension travel. The optional ESP is well worth the extra IMO.
But.....
Below 5000rpm it doesn't feel any quicker than a 2.0Zetec or Ghia Focus, there is very little midrange. The engine just gets course at high revs wich doesn't make it a pleasure to puch along. The Focus is a heavy car for a FWD hatch which really highlights the lack of torque.
Through very very tight country lanes where power isn't important the ST170 may be able to keep up with the scoob. On all other roads the Scoob will leave it for dead.
And to add.
The car I get to travel in/drive has the Climate/Xenon headlight pack, the Leather seat/Sound system pack, electric sunroof, ESP, rear spoiler and metallic paint.
That makes it more expensive than a UK WRX.
My work mate did however buy it from Ford as an ex-Demo, 6 months old for £13999
