Nah gav, the snake is a better road by far, longer, twistier, steep uphill corners, and even steeper downhill ones. + no 50 limit, just gorgeous NATIONAL all the way to Ladybower. You'll see tonight, in a convoy of 12+ scoobys, hehe.

Agree, Snake Pass is a cracking road ... never been over it in the scoob though
The A507 between Baldock and Buntingford in Herts is a super road ... lucky Quenbys having this cracking stretch of road as their test route
Cheers

There was some discussion on this one in the Scottish section and a few folks came up with the same bit of road, out of an awful lot of options, which was the road from Ullapool to Garve. This road (A835) has an excellent surface and on some sections you can see, even around the bends, that it is clear for a considerable distance ahead. It doesn't have any tight bends but is open and flowing and theoretical calculations have shown that speeds of 120+mph might be possible on some of the entertaining sections. On the straights aerodynamics would probably be the limiting factor.
What you have to watch is that this road carries the ferry traffic from Ullapool to Inverness and so, at certain times, it will have considerable HGV and caravan congestion.
I would guess that the interesting bit is about 30 miles long. After Garve the turns get pretty tight so don't get caught by surprise. Also, most corners after Garve are blind and so safe driving means very much reduced speeds such that you can stop in the distance you can see clear.
There we go, every police tax collector with a camera has now been depolyed to that road!

Another Cat & Fiddle fan, was out having a go on Sunday in my old 205. From Macc end, go past Cat & Fiddle and turn right back towards Congleton. Less plod and more "is it or isn't it flat?" crests and bumps. Hard right and left at the Rose & Crown pub is a gem.
Covered the Orme a few times when doing the Cambrian, always preferred it the correct way. No lifting over the big crest at the junction of the "top" road allowed!

Toonman - too many speed cameras in the North East if you ask me. I was on Skye in late September 2001, perhaps that helped. Best bit the road up to & from the tiny six-car ferry (not Mallaig) to Broadford (turn left at Shiel Bridge off A87).
Worst bit was the midgies!!

hey !! wakeboarder.
that is a good road round the orme ,it is free in the night time but just watch because sometimes you do get holiday makers coming down the wrong way ,it is even better in the dark

"Best bit the road up to & from the tiny six-car ferry..."
You mean to Glenelg. We stayed there for a fortnight. Lovely road, but too many gits who don't know what passing places are for. Nice ferry though - great seeing Otters in the Sound of Sleet on the way over.
As for the speed cameras in the NE; not sure which parts you're on about, but there are hardly ANY speed cameras in the NE, compared with other parts of the UK. Those that are around, are in built up areas, where they should be.
Cheers

It's a long time since I drove the road, but Fort Augustus to Inverness by the south side of the loch rather than the A82 was fun.
I'm near the Cat and Fiddle, but reckon that the A54 from the top to Congleton is better.

Not diss-ing the NE by any stretch of the imagination. Stayed at Bamburgh on way to Scotland, fantastic coastline & Dunstanburgh very tough golf course!
A1 on the way up (lots of cameras), back via Coldstream (lots of cameras too).
Will be back soon hopefully. Just changed my profile (I think!) to allow email. Please send your secret routes?
Worst thing about the midgies is you can't kill 'em cos the rest smell the blood and get even more bloodthirtsy!
Cheers

You've picked the two roads that are murder for Cameras; you're right. The A68/696 from Edinburgh to Newcastle used to be a brilliant road, but Edinburgh to Carter Bar is ruined now due to the Cams. We head across the A66, and up the M6 to Scotland now. More miles, but less time due to the (boring), but less hassle Motorways.
I didn't know about Midgies and them smelling blood... "D" in O level Biology. Guess I should've listened more instead of learing at the very cute teacher... Mrs Moore, where are you now?
I'll email some routes to you - remind me if I've not done it in a few days.
Cheers

Thanks Mike
The midgie blood thing was a tip from a local, I ain't that smart!
There was a cute bio teacher at my school too, I never got as far as 'O' level (we are both showing our age here!). I definitely remember her administering 1 guy detention "for overly staring at my breasts".
Wasn't me unfortunately.....

I don't rate Snake and Cat 'n' Fiddle that highly these days.
Well beaten by some stuff in Scotland and Wales.
If your going to Catalunya this year, the C25 to Vic The most stunning views and a few tunnels to listen to your de-cat in. Plenty of full-bore-dont-lift corners (full bore as in flat in 5th), utterly stunning

The back roads from Calpe to Alcoy in Spain. CV720 I think. Exactly like the stages of the Catalunya, an hour and a half non stop of the twistiest roads I have ever driven. The road goes from sea level to around 4200 feet. The Scoob was in its element, I wasn't cos I was absolutly knackered and scared of the very long drops. (petrols dirt cheap over there though)

Long Hill for me A5004 between Buxton and Whaley Bridge but that Edale road last night was superb. I dont like the Snakes bumps but the bends are great. Cat and Fiddle a great road spoilt by its 50 limit and speed traps/helicopters.
