I live 5 minutes drive from the Derbyshire peak district (its full of nice twisty roads)
A mate has a BM 535i and reckons it would eat my car (99 UK Wagon with full decat zost)for breakfast on the tight twisty roads of the peak district - Anyone reckon he's right or would I stand a chance. Thoughts please

I used to have an E12 M535i which I rebuilt. It was a great car but not in the Scooby class. I knew of one with the full M5 engine and that did have some poke. The handling would not stay with a Scoob.

I had an E34 535 Sport and though it was quick, it was very heavy. I know the newer ones are lighter and handle better, but on typical Peak backroads the old 535 wouldn't have kept up with my 'preza sport. A lot of the Peak roads are quite bumpy and can make a heavy car struggle. On something like the Snake pass an impreza is probably the perfect car.

Jim-Chesterfield has a good selection of fast roads and the only ones you need worry about the BMW being quicker on are the dual carriageways-esp Topspeed Hill(A61 from Sheffield-Chesterfield).
If you fancy comparing your car(not road racing, attending different events
) against a lot of different quick cars, come along to the 200plus club meet. It's on the 1st monday of every month at the Carbrook Hall Hotel across the road from Meadowhall retail park
.

No need to visit the Peak District. Just show him the performance figures from any car magazine and he will see just how much slower his BMW is, then explain how the Subaru's AWD gives an additional edge on twisty roads.

I think you would beat it comfortably with an STi in a drag race (not a WRX, given transmission losses):
'Current' 5 series 535i, 164 bhp/tonne
Current Scoob, WRX is 158 bhp/tonne,
STi is 196 bhp/tonne

Nice one skiddus_markus - I know the place that you mean. I'm away at the begining of next month and the month after I'm on the afters shift so reckon I'll make one to the November meet.

Trouble is with things like this, they are a good way for it to end in tears. My advice is don't race him. A bit of fun on a road is ok, but build something up like this and someone may die.

I drive my mums Bf's 535 Beamer (my99) quite alot. And there is NO way it could keep up with my scoob.
Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic car, and it REALLY can make good progress, and is so well balanced. And that lovely tourque ahhh. They are quick...but not THAT quick![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Now I reckon a 540 might give a you some trouble, especially powering out of the bends on to a nice long straight

quote: "Most races are won by the skill of the driver and not the bhp of the car..."
I was being rude I'd say -"bollox"
as I'm not I won't, I will however say I'm a pretty crap driver really and I've "raced" people who are far better than I am at the Nurburgring. However I overtook them simply because my car has more BHP. This was me V some of the local nutters from Adenau, no contest they are simply better drivers with more local knowledge beaten by the blunt instrument of BHP.

What I'd really like to see is a car which almost no one talks about, the Alpina B3 4WD (3-series) with 300hp. I wish someone could compare this with an Impreza already , might be real close!!
If anyone on this board has the connections with Alpina to get a press or sample car I think a comparison is in order.
