Hi
When I drive My scubby a little hard, what is the whirring noise given by the engine which sounds like a belt being driven.I know its not the cam belt, as I have replaced many in the past. The last time I heard this sound, was when I drove a full group N Impreza in Ireland, that was the dog's and I would recommend that experience to anyone.
Back to the noise, mine makes it and it sounds the b------s

Any ideas ??

Without actually listening to it it's impossible to tell. Likeliest candidate though, especially if you've also heard the same thing on a Group N car, would be induction/turbo noise.

Turbo noise by the sounds of it but may be a leaking BOV. Driving hard means higher boost so it makes sense that that's when it would be more likely to leak. May just be on the limit as opposed to the bottle top scenario.
