Is a cat required for MOT on a R reg Sti?

I know its probably been asked before, but one of my mates exhaust needs replacing on his Sti R reg, and its MOT is due soon. Will it pass if he fitted a de-cat exhaust?
Am I right in saying they are not required on imports for the MOT?
(like my Pulsar got through)

I would have thought so as the PPP on the clasic shape removed the center cat and only left the one in the downpipe.
Cars after a certain year require a cat (94 I think) regardless if it is an import or not. You will probably find the pulsar was before compulsory cat time.
