Mid Life Engine Problems with the Turbo
#1
Ive being looking at a few turboes around the 85000 - 90000 miles mark which is quite high.
I have heard that the turbo and a few other mayor engine parts start to break and need replacing in mid life.
My question is when is mid life and if its got a full subaru history will it go for a long time yet?
I also went in one today a 1998 2000 model and it didnt seem to have a kick when the turbo came on and didnt sound particularly lively like a friends gt5 turbo, do you think there might be a problem somewhere and what it might be.
Cheers Guys

It's impossible to put a typical service life on major components like the turbo. This is a "piece of string" question as it's all down to how the car has been driven and maintained during its life.
As for the car you test-drove not sounding like a Renault 5 GT Turbo... Imprezas aren't supposed to sound like R5GTT's, so this tells you precisely nothing!
If you're unsure of what to look for in a used car, about the best thing to do is HPI it then go for an AA/RAC inspection, as at least then you'll have a bit of an insurance policy if something goes ****-up. Beyond that, look for a full service history, list of receipts for new parts, the usual stuff.
Could also see if there's an experienced Scoobynetter near you who'd be prepared to go along and hold your hand. At least then you'll be in the company of someone who knows how these cars are supposed to drive, so you'll know whether the one you're considering is misbehaving or not.
