You have to be running 280+bhp in a scoob to keep up with an M3.
In every test done by a car mag, the M3 has always beaten the STI8 PPP in a straight line.
I've seen people on here saying that their 220bhp wrx spanked an M3! Bolloks! I 've got a Type R and I've had a play with a new M3 and it was pretty even.
I was behind him turning out of a road onto a mile long A road, I guess we were both in second as we had a rolling start out of the junction. He put his foot down as did I. I stuck to him like glue though I was really going for it. He bottled at 80mph and put on his brakes.

I know there has been plenty of v M3 threads and I haven't gone through any to see the results.

Would be interested to hear peoples opinions on this scenario.

STI 5 mods are APS FMIC, full decat, K&N and BRD Tek 3 v assumed standard M3 new shape. Straight dual carridgeway.

Whats would be the outcome?

i got a version 4 wrx import.. full decat and i'm not sure about any other mods induction kit seems standard apart from the filter which is APS and it dont fit properly onto the maf n i need to sort it...

Took off from traffic lights with an M3 (latest one) and left the M3 a fair distance back... M3's are 300Bhp+ aren't they? my cousins got one but i aint had the chance to drive it yet...

I didn't know they only had 343bhp, I thought they had more than that Anyway lets just say that the owner is probably phoning his dealer right now for a power upgrade

Not sure of my bhp, estimated at 330 (Bob Rawles judgement)

Mad

Not quite a true test then?

This was similar, rolling start from a roundabout in second gear along a very long dual carridge up to !!! I can't say what speed toward the end I was gradually gaining on him. Don't forget my car isn't standard

Yup thats true MAdGypsy its gota be above 280Bbhp to keep up to the M3

I left him from a standing start and mines a wrx import... i have NO idea what bhp mine is as its n import n already got a couple mods,i havn't changed a thing on it YET... baar a new clutch..

Could say the M3 driver slipped his foot off the gas pedal dunno... bu he did take off like a rocket... and them cars are HEAVY!!! i think that makes a HUGE difference in accleration... mines lightweight panels etc.. (i think)

<yawns>

MY Type R was easily a match for a new M3 on Silverstones' GP circuit..

<laces hands behind head>

but, if I had the choice of a free M3 or a free scoob

If money wasn't an issue then of course I would have an M3. My last two cars were BM's (325 coupe & 328 Convertible) so I can testify to their outstanding all round ability.
I was actually in the process of buying a used M3 (new shape) when a couple of business ventures went the way of the pear.
My budget for a car went from £35k to £15k overnight.
I thought the scoob would be a compromise, and in certain areas such as build qaulity and ride, it is. But, I have to say, the Type R is the pup's nuts. It is pant soilingly quick.
They really are very different animals. The only thing they have in common is performance.

Being a current owner of an old shape M3 evo 320 BHP. and Having owned and Mitsi Evo 5 running 330bhp, and driven several versions of the sti's. I can tell you my M3 evo, and even more so the new shape M3 would leave any scooby behind on a dual carraige way. A tuned Sti, would give a M3 alot of grief too 100mph, but the M3 will keep pulling as hard from 100mph as it will from 60mph. An M3 has to be driven right to the red line 8000rpm to get the full potential.

However given some twisties and push and Mitsi Evo or any sti to its limit, and it will leave an M3 for dead. Driven very hard on the twisties, the M3 will keep up and suprise most STI owners. But really driven on the limit the M3 will get in a lot of bother, unless a really experienced driver is behind the wheel.

Just my thoughts from someone who has driven dyno proven Cossies running 340bhp, sti's 4,5, Mitsi Evo's 5,6, Starion Turbo's, Escort Turbo's, Porsche 911 turbo running 450bhp+, porsche 964, Misti twin turbo and many others.

M3s seem to go well, I followed one out of a roundabout where he was totally on the limit and then going for it (could hear it screaming )

I had to use part throttle in every gear to avoid getting much closer, as speeds increased it only got worse for him. This was with 406 BHP on a very conservative set of rollers. Previously with est. 340 BHP in the Scooby it was pretty even (TD05, FMIC, 1.5 bar) against another M3. Not been up against any others except these two.

Although my car weighs a lot less than an M3, it has turbo lag and AWD losses, hence why I think a Classic Scooby needs similar power to keep pace with an M3 in a straight line in the dry.

Glad to hear you got her sorted and are keeping her!

I'm on the lookout for a nice Type R myself.....

I won't be at the Welsh unfortunately, especially since they brought it forward 2 weeks.

I was down at Chatham a fortnight ago with 5 students at the grading so since we'd spent most of our time getting them ready we haven't really spent any time getting ready for champs.

Doesn't Tony send you a newsletter, or aren't you registered with UKTA?

Cheers

John

I totally blitzed a 3 the other night on a tight twisty rounabout infested road. Still I always thought they were called M3s, not C3s????

Talizman

I got it back on Sat. It had a new (18K km) engine instead of a rebuild.
I haven't taken it over 4000 rpm. (3000 since I've known it's detting)
It's detting at high revs because of a fcuked fuel pump.
It'll be fixed on Thursday at Power Engineering.

Are you going to be at the Welsh champs? They changed it to the 13th which means I can't make it. Plus Tony Williams didn't send us an invite
