Apologies to anyone who's on the SpeedTrap Bible list and may have seen this.

Anyway, for the rest of you.

Check out this new GATSO avoidance system, which is based on GPS

It's funny, but the FAQ authors came up with this precise idea about 2 years ago, but we never took it any further. I'm glad someone has actually manufactured the device, as it is 100% legal and effective. GPS is good for up to 250m accuracy, which is all you need if you get a 1 mile warning of any nearby device.

We thought of delivering the database updates via mobile phone, or download via the Net etc, but none of us had the time to take the idea any further....

The US DOD turned off GPS 'selective availability' positional degredation last week, so all civilian GPS receivers should be able to pinpoint 90% of their fixes to 30 metres or less.

This should be accurate enough for advanced warning of camera sites (if the database is accurate enough) - obviously no good against hand held or mobile equipment.

Cheers

Thumbs up

Standard GPS is now good to 10 metres at 95%.

Right now we're seeing a 3.5 metre range difference in position to a multi DGPS solution (the DGPS is good for 3 metres). We're using 12 channel receivers though.

The worst I've seen it (standard GPS) since they turned off the 'jitter' is 18 metres.

GPS in a motor can be very useful now! (eg speedo cals). But those dudes in Beemers and Mercs with expensive Inertial Nav systems have wasted their money a bit (except for when going thru tunnels etc).

Yawn .... sorry I just realised I was getting really boring there.....

From: same time, different place
Wink

Could be argued that those dudes in Mercs and Beemers have wasted their money anyway
