Welcome to Scoobynet!

Silly question maybe, but why are you asking us? At end of day if you've paid the garage to fit a new engine, it should be them looking for advice, not you.

To be honest there are a large number of things that could prevent the engine starting after an engine change, and there's not much any of us can do (bar guess) without actually looking at it.

If it's firing intermittently, but won't pick up to idle, it could be a faulty crank or cam position sensor, but that's just a wild guess, there are plenty of other things that could cause it.

If they're stuck, suggest to them that they take advice from your local Subaru dealer. At least they will have the equipment necessary to quickly pinpoint and correct whatever's wrong.

Edited to say: What happened to the old engine?

It would be a finger in the air as said.
But I have seen a few posts on here were cars won't start and these have been faulty crank or cam position sensor, well just dirty sensors that needed cleaning.

he says there is a lot off water pressure thats not normal

If the garage hasn't done a scoob before then they could have mixed up some pipes as there are so many!

look on the bright side at least your saving on fuel

Mine did that a couple of days ago, got some whipper snapper fella round and it was the Fuel Relay Switch. Might be that, might not, though it was worth a post though.

are there things that should be done before starting. etc.. any help please.
1. Make sure its not in gear (you could smash into a wall)

2. Put on your shades (you dont want to look uncool)

3. Drop the windows (mmmmmmm the noise, well if it starts)

4. Make sure u havent got Kylie playing on full blast (very embarrassing)

Anything else you should do before starting?

What do you mean by "loads of water pressure"? Is it chucking water out of the overflow tank or something?

your garage should know this straight away, classic symptoms of head gasket failure.leak in the gasket allows the compression stroke to leak in to the cooling system resulting in throwing the coolant out of the rad cap and engine will not fire because of the water in the cylinders, needs a thorough strip down and recon really.

Yep indeedy. Was wondering about this from the start but presumed that professional garage mechanics wouldn't be clueless enough not to spot it. Oh well...

Mr Hundred, did you supply this engine or did the garage get it for you? Either way, you don't want this one in your car, and suggest you get whoever supplied it to take it back in return for one that isn't knackered.

i supplied the engine to the garage via a-z auto parts birmingham, have you heard of them?can the head gasket on the near side of 1995 wrx be done in situ? or is it engine out again? i have car back now and not going to the garage again.it also doesnt seem to be firing on front pistons(have lead out and good spark on back two but no spark on front)what could this be?

Say what? You are driving the car around on two cylinders with a failed head gasket?

Whether the gasket can be replaced with the engine in situ or not is a moot point. Did you buy the engine from the parts supplier on the basis that it was a runner? If so, you should be back in touch with them explaining that it's far from 100%, not contemplating getting the gasket replaced yourself. What if that's not the only thing wrong with this engine?

You shouldn't be driving the car around in a partially running/possibly damaged state, as you could potentially make the situation worse, and negate any warranty agreement you made with the supplier of the new engine - as well as with the garage who fitted it.

Talk to this A-Z mob in the morning and see what they've got to say about it.
