I have just bought a Impreza 2000 turbo AWD, its running fine except for sometimes when driving hard the turbo seems to cut off and then come back on making the car kangaroo and then pick up again. This always seems to happen between 3-4000 rpm or around 60mph. It does not always do it. Any ideas anyone?

overboost leading to fuel cut. Does the car have a boost guage?

I have no boost guage, is it something cheap to fix? the turbo certainly works fine if you let it wind up over 3500 then go for it it flies like the wind?

I had this problem but further up the rev range.
I changed the plugs and the fuel filter and it sorted it.

I am taking it into a impreza garage to get it looked at tomorrow, what should I pay for a plug/filter change? Or could I do it myself?

Check the pipes around the actuator for splits or leaks as this will increase the boost pressure as the leak will act as a bleed valve to the actuator. This would cause the fuel cut. These pipes do get brittle from the heat off the turbo

How many miles has the car done? I changed mine at 43,000 miles. I cut it open for a nose and it was black. Filter is £25 from graham goode so around that price. Plugs are around £45-£50.
They are both easy jobs if you have the right tools.
For the plugs, most time is spent just removing the air filter box and washer water bottle. Thats how i did them anyway.
Remember to put your finger over the fuel pipe if you do the filter, it is under pressure and you don't want it spraying everywhere.

probably a stupid question here... but how ahr dare you driving? Above 7K revs the fuel will cut out in order to protect the engine. I'm guessing you aren't driving it THAT hard but you never know...

ooopppps!!!

sorry, am half browsing, half working. Saw the 60mph bit and not the rpm bit - figured that around 60-ish in 2nd your not far off the redline.

*looks sheepish*

A quick session at the impreza garage on the diagnostics sorted it, it was overboosting and the ecu was cutting it off. Thanx for all the suggestions. £60 reasonable?

£60 is more than reasonable if they've sorted it out.
