First off Hi!

I'm after a wagon (to be different and for my dog). Here's what I want:

1. 40k,but 50k miles at a push. With history
2. Has to be clean and tidy
3. Not sure of the BHP specs but would like it to have 250 BHP I guess or more.
4. Not fussed if its a UK car or not(actually should I be wary on this?)
5. If mods have alreday been done, and are done properly such as exhaust, filter, dump/blow off valve then cool and I realise I will pay more for that, but it'll save me in the long run
6. I prefer the older version with the more rectangular headlights (if that makes sense!!)

Any ideas what sort of money I will be looking at roughly for all of this?? I will have £10k+ available but no more than say £14k

P.S Im 27 but insurance isnt a problem ;-)

Cheers all

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like your best bet would be a 5door STI. You should be able to get one of the last of the "classic" shapes within your budget, but the classic STI is an import you will have to watch what fuel etc you use.

The UK cars as standard only have 215BHP whereas the STI will have ~280BHP out of the box.

Have a look at the SIDC FAQ for general impreza info.

Cheers for the reply. Must admit I would like one with exhaust etc etc done so I dont have to blow the cash on it, and if it happens to be nudging the door of 300BHP then so be it!

Oppps Just read your reply properly. So you're saying a UK STI is ok for 250BHP? Must admit that sounds spot on as a base car

The classic (the sahpe you are reffering too) sti's will be JDM imports, The Only STi's sold in the UK are 4 door saloons of the newer shape (MY01 &gt. The UK spec 5 door Turbo 2000 is the UK car you are reffering to and its standard BHP varies from year to year but is around 215bhp, There are lot of modified uk cars out there with 250+bhp.

Take a good look at the SIDC FAQ, there is lots to learn.

and Welcome you will be able to get a very good clean example of either a modified UK car or JDM import for your budget.

No, no such thing as a UK STI for the "classic" shape scoobs, it's either a UK, in which case it'll have 215 bhp unless it's been modded, or it's an STI, in which case it's a Japanese import and will have more like 280 bhp. That said there are also some 5 door WRXs, which are also Japanese imports, but will have slightly less power than the STI, more like 260 bhp.

Edit: - Beaten to it !!

sorry didn't make that too clear but did say "due to being an import". I meant a jap STI wagon.

Doh!

I'm confused already!! the major prob is when buying most people are not going to be able to qoute what BHP they have. Therefore I need to approach it as 'its an STI, therefore it must be xxxBHP, and more if work has been done to it'

Unfortuantely I am a complete novice as far as Impreza's go. In fact ive never even been in one let alone driven one. Just need a step up to serious power from my current 210BHP Golf VR6, and that means Japanese and Turbo!!

Anyone recommend where to go to test drive/buy one? (I'm in Epsom in Surrey) I may end up buying private in the end cause I will be going for a low mileage etc so hopefully I should be reasonably safe

Russ,
check out the www.sidc.co.uk FAQ for some info. It's only up to date for Pre new shape WRX models though.

Somewhat confusingly you could get Japanese grey imports in the old classic shape as WRX. The UK varieant was called the Turbo 2000 and was lower power than the WRX or WRX Sti.

In 2001 (I think) the new model was released in UK - the WRX (or bug eye!). You could probably pick up a European imported UK spec WRX for the money you want- but it would probably be standard spec. A frend has just bought a superb 2002 plate WRX 4 door though, with 9000 miles for £13500. It's mint (and full UK spec from Belgium).

oops, Cheam Motors in Ewell village are your nearest bet. They may have the odd old style MY99 or 2000 on the forecourt.....

Dont get a wagon if you want power, they wont be much on your VR6.
Get a jap sti Type R or RA.

Think my best bet might be to get one that is already modified then I will know the true power figure

To be honest I dont really want the wagon cause I dont think the looks are as good ,but having a 7 stone German Shepherd does limit what i can have, although I dont actually take her out much in the car, and it would be sacrilege to put her on the back seats!

err Hixton - what did you base that comment on?
agree with Dave Wallis - Bollxx.

If 1st requirement is bit of space for life's other items - then the wagon's ideal. Mine's a new'un - but can hardly call 265bhp tardy.

Have just loaded 3 kids bikes, one all-terain pushchair, my mountain bike, my kitesurfer (kite/board/harness etc) - and one travel cot. (Cunning eh - the kids & dog go in the wife's car) Try that in your very fast 4 dr!

Bell & Colville also good dealers near you. No-one has mentioned PPP'd UK Wagons - from MY99 onwards, PPP gave a good hike. Just wonder if you mightn't squeeze in an MY 01 Bugeye Wagon/PPP for the top of your your money. You'd certainly get an MY99 or an '00.

russ..i looked into both jdm and uk wagons (although on a lower budget than yours)

check this page for detailed specs on jap cars-many 5 door's kick out less than the 4 door version....

http://www.iwoc.co.uk/jpimp4.html

plus jap imports are usually a lot steeper for insurance.

no matter what model u get...there lots of fun

Bell & Colville on the way to Guildford? Used to do Louts & SAAB? Cheers I'll give them a try

Another question on the 3 and 5 doors saloons do the rear seats fold down flat giving access to the boot, cause if so I might not need a wagon :-)

The seats fold down on the classic shape UK Turbo 4 doors, but not on classic WRX or STi's I believe, oh and not on the RB5 either.

Not strictly true. If its a MY94-98 it will be 208 bhp. It only aquired 215 bhp for the 99 model year.

Sorry to be so pedantic but its fact

Sorry for butting in but i'm after a scoob too.
Does that mean a 99-00 classic will have the 215bhp engine and not the 208 ???
Or is it just the bugeyes??

So does that mean (excuse my ignorance!!!) that to have fold down seats Im going to have to have the less powerful models? :-( or a wagon

P.S I've said to myself that I want 98/99 no earlier, but not the bug eye as im not a fan,

cheers again all, much appreciated :-)

STIwannabe, yes all models produced from October 1998 (i.e. MY99) to 2000 (pre bugeye) have 215 bhp. However I believe 2000 models had some kind of emissions mod which took the edge off the performance. Your best bet is a MY99 i.e. T or V reg.

Russ, don't discount the bugeye. With Morettes or Prodrive lights it looks the business in 5 door guise. Plus the fact you can get PPP fitted and get 242 bhp and 261 lb/ft of torque (more than a standard STI ). Get PPP on a MY99 wagon and you are talking the business, like RB5 style flexible friend
