Has anyone towed with a WRX? I have heard a few scary stories about clutches going generally, must admit I am surprised as I had thought the scoob was bullet proof for reliability. How bad are the clutches really? I tow a boat and its the hill starts off slipways I am concerned about mainly.

my 02 pulls an eighteen foot bayliner and its no problem on the road but when you get a sandy steep slipway it does have problems

once i had ask someone with a 4x4 to pull the boat out to even ground because it just could not handle it

on any slipway you will get clutch smells with a small size boat

if you here about a clutch upgrade let me know
the performance upgrades like ap will be no better i think

Hi Mate

I had a 16" ski boat on the back of MY02 WRX, no probs. Took it to the lakes most weekends and never got any clutch smells at all.

Spose it depends on the weight and inclination of boat/slip. One thing though, when all the other front or rear wheel drive cars used to slip and spin, mine was straight out no probs.

Pete,

..... now boatless but as the wife tells him "you have a lovely conservatory"........double

Thanks for the replies, couldnt find the thread after i had posted it, now found out how to use the search facility.
I did get clutch smells just pulling the trailer out, the slip at West Mids Waterski Tamworth is very steep though. Boat is approx 1000KG.
I think with a low ratio box it would be no prob.

Does anyone know if the clutch smells indicate serious damage or significantly reduce the life of the clutch?

Got the T shirt re the conservatory I have managed to keep hold of the boat, I did have to get rid of my R5 GT turbo many years ago for similar reasons! I couldnt rest until I recently got the Scoob mainly as I get car allowance and the new scoob is comfortable and quiet enough for business travelling as well as fun.

Clutch smell indicates you are frying the clutch.... so if it does it every time you pull away id suggest you will

a) reduce the life of the clutch significantly

b) need an uprated clutch (not an ORM one) when you replace it - one that will cope!
