Angry

Filled my car up today with BP's supposedly new petrol (my98 turbo) and now it runs like a flaming tractor!!!! Thats the 1st and last time I use BP's new product.

Now have to wait until monday so I can get my car to a garage and have the tank emptied (it is really running that bad) the car was running fine before I filled up.

I have tried to syphon the tank myself, but I cannot get the pipe into the fuel tank, does anybody have any suggestions?

HELP!!

Stick to the OPTIMAX guys.

Thanks

Mark

You could remove the boot carpet and open up into the tank and syphon it that way.

Behind the offside rear seat there are a couple of panels with about 8mm small nuts holding them on. Try the passenger side one first as that doesn't have all the fuel pump/level stuff attached. Should then be able to see into the fuel tank - ie you are looking at petrol. You could then siphon it off easily to a can outside the car.

Then you could refill with some other fuel from another can.

bearing in mind that may only empty half the tank as it pumps from left to right so you will still have the other half to empty some how

Put a tank full of this in mine and it goes just the same as on optimax. Maybe you got a dodgy batch?

Thanks for all the info guys.

John it is a classic, but I have managed to drain just over 3/4 of a tank, so now going to fill it up with optimax.

Will let you know if it makes a difference (fingers crossed)

Thanks

Mark

everyone should say BP is good and Shell may decide to reduced the cost of Optimax which would be better for all of us!

It is an MY98 Impreza 5 door.

Should I just replace the MAF?

So I guess I need to get it to a Subaru dealers then, unless anybody knows of a specialist in the cambrige area??

Thanks

Yeh, I put air in my tyres from a Supermarket garage and my car just wants to lift off over hump back bridges at 80mph.

I've taked it all out now and put proper air in it.

I went over the same bridge at 20 mph and nothing, it just rolled over smoothly.

FFS!!!

The O2 sensor went on my 99MY when the idle was fluctuating like yours, NOT the maf.

The fuel was the 1st thing to come into my mind, because I had been running the car all morning and not even a squeak at a problem. As soon as I fill up then the problem starts, so I guess I might not be the only person to think this, if it happened to anyone else.

Iam not a mechanic or even mechanically minded, and reading stories on here about the petrol being 100+ron, 97ron, tanks not being cleaned out properly at the service stations, subarus being tempremental to what fuel they have etc, does make a persons mind think that the fuel could have been the cause.

Does anyone have a part number for an O2 sensor and MAF for an MY98?

Thanks to everyone who has given some useful advice.

Mark

Mark

Also can you tell me where the O2 sensor is located.

I have now stopped blaming the fuel, so wish I could change the title of the post.

Have got 40 litres of ULTIMATE UNLEADED sitting in my garage. Got car booked for a diagnostic tomorrow.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks

I filled up with this in Bedford on Saturday morning (83.9ppl) and was going to do 3 runs at the POD. However the car seemed to hesitate a few times on the way there so I decided not to run (especially as I havent got the knocklink or dawes fitted yet). Going to fill it up to the brim tonight with good old Optimax. However I still have about an eighth of a tank left and have done 265 miles - I usually only get 240 to a full tank on Shell!

This is the fuel tank shown as you would see it if you were kneeling on the passenger seat looking backwards. The red circles I put on are the plates to lift. The one of the right is easier, you'll probably be able to drain it all from there as long as you can get access to the other side as well.

At your own risk etc, care with sources of spark etc. However, a lot of people fit fuel pumps - just take sensible precautions.

Note that when you start it up again, there will be some old petrol in the system still which might make it run rough.. if of course the petrol is the cause. Might be worth keeping the fuel for legal reasons, also consider getting it tested if there is any damage to your car and keep your receipt.

Definitly did not put diesel in it!!!

I have just filled up with Optimax, it has made it a little better, but it is still running rough (have just driven 15miles or so).

The rev needle when its idleing (excuse spelling) constanlty goes up & down from about 200rpm to 1000rpm.

Does anybody have ideas as to what is going on? Or who I should contact to find out more.

Thanks people.

Mark

Could it be my MAF sensor?

Petrol alone wouldn't have been responsible for this. Even supermarket unleaded wouldn't cause issues like this.

Classic symptom of MAF sensor failure, although there are other things that could cause it. What model year is your car?

To be certain, you need it on a Select Monitor/DeltaDash etc. to check the MAF outputs. An ECU reset as detailed here may help, and may also throw up some error codes which could help in diagnosis.
