They are, officially, legal only for driving back to your permanent residence which is named on the temp reg paperwork.

They are valid for 7 days.

However, my local VRO told me it *was* legal to drive. So I did. Police said it's not legal.

I had the same dilemma when I had a few days delay when registering my Dutch import at Birmingham VRO.

I contacted my local traffic police and he told me I could use the Z plates legally for 12 months if I needed. I explained my situation to him in detail but he was very clear on their legality.

You'd think the feds (bless 'em) would have a web site with all of the laws on so we could be referred to them to get the definitive answer.

My VRO (Shrewsbury) also said it was ok to drive on the Z plates until UK reg number arrived.

I asked the same question about a month ago when my WRX Wagon turned up. My importer told me that I could quite happily drive on them until my UK reg came through. My only advice would be to keep all the paperwork, eg; MOT, SVA, COC, etc in the car, so if you are stopped you can whip it out and show the policeperson your file of stuff about the car, and they might leave you alone.

Sounds good. The Dutch dealer was extremely insistant that they were only valid for 7 days (and it says this on the doc), but if everyone is getting other information, sounds like rules are getting more sensible.

When I imported my car I was told they were valid for a month.

Sean: The plates may not be assigned but the DVLA will know who you are when you register the car!

Thanks

Gavin
