On my way to work this morning, pulled out from a junction and what happened…nothing. No boost. There where no indications of any problems before this happened.
The turbo is spinning and sounds like it is picking up rpm’s. The engine will still run and idle ok. On tick-over the engine is hunting slightly and it sounds like it is sucking in surges. I have just stripped out all the inter-cooler, airbox, and all the pipes and did not find any splits, popped of hoses or anything else that looked amiss.
So I have a few questions:
1. Is there a way of checking the turbo?
2. Could any of the flow sensors affect the car in this way?
3. If it has damaged the input or output blades surely I would have known about it?
Also I have got some friends who import cars, they have got 2x WRX’s, 1x RA, 1x STi for breaking I don’t know what year they are but does anyone know which turbo they have fitted? My car is a MY97 WRX, will my ECU etc cope with a larger turbo (off the RA?).
If anyone has any ideas before I start unbolting things they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You might have a stuck dump valve or waste gate, if the Turbo is spinning up OK then it is most likely the dump valve.
Try revving your engine from under the bonnet, you might be able to hear the air escape.
A quick visit to your local friendly Scooby dealer may be in order.....

Stuart,
It’s an import so my friendly Scooby dealer is out. I could not hear anything under the bonnet I presume that it will be obvious?
When I rev the engine should I be able to see the actuators moving?
Thanks

You can pull the waste gate actuator rod against the spring in the actuator, it should be quite tight to pull, and clank back strongly when you let go. This checks the spring and the rods are free.
Make sure the wastgate hoses are'nt trapped, the easiest way to test the waste gate is to pull the hose off the wastgate actuator, and block it with a bolt or similiar, then GENTLY drive the car, it should boost very quickly, and strongly - just be careful!!.
If this is OK, and the turbo is spooling up & boosting, then the air must be forced out from the blow-off valve, underneath the intercooler, bit more difficult to check this one, but try removing the small vacuum hose to it then trying.
Hope this helps.
