Grinding Noise..
#1
Hi Guys,
My MY94 is giving me a whine and a kind of metal on metal noise coming fomr the box in 3rd,4th and 5th. Its been like that for a couple of weeks now, i tend not to go far till i get it sorted. I know it may be the bearings or something....
Phoned a couple of garages up ma way, expecting 6 hours labour and about £400+vat sheets to get the box totally recon'd.
Does this sound fair.....?
Anyone know any where in the Central Scotland area that could go better....?
Cheers...

Sounds like it could be a centre bearing on the mainshaft starting to fail. hard to say if the price is ok or not as these things vary so much from one end of the country to another. It all depends on how well recommended the garage is as to how good a job it will be. But nothing stops you phoning a gearbox specialist and asking them how much to recon a box, just as a guideline.

On a similar theme, have you tried phoning round the breakers/parts sellers/reconditioners to find out how much an exchange recon box would be?
If it's important that the car spend as little time as possible out of commission, this would definitely be the best route. Plus, if you do shop around, you're not limited to getting it done locally, and can thus pick 'n' choose the best combination of price, warranty and reputation.
