MY97, AP organic racing clutch with ligtened flywheel (9kg as i recall) & STi release bearings (no clutch judder!) fitted by TSL about 6 months (circa 4k miles) ago when original un started slipping.

Dazza, how much mate ?
Also, if so many people have had their clutch changed under warranty (at great cost to Subaru), how come they haven't yet designed out the fault ?
If AP/Organic clutches combined with lightened flywheels solve the problem (for the same cost), how come Subaru don't install a similar set-up.
Seems like a no-brainer to me.
Wilster.

Well is it?
I'm getting seriously fed up with it. Apparantly "it's normal".
I'm fed up of looking like a complete **** at roundabouts first thing in the morning.
Mines an X reg P1, just out of warrenty, and if anything happens to mine, goodbye future STI (+extras) sale, as far as Subaru are concerned.
Can the clutch be replaced on the extended warrenty?
More to the point, how likely is it with an ext warr that anything will be done??????
Not Happy.

welcome to subaru clutches... get used to it ... well from my previous 2 scoobys anyway (UK T2000 and WRX).. it just doesnt like being cold... got an STI8 now.. and i still notice it a tiny bit when its cold...
I actually had the clutch replaced on my UK T2000 and it did the same after a few weeks once it had worn in...
Im no specialist just speaking from experience

I've had it witha couple of cars. It's no big deal, although my dealer said many times they'd change the clutch. I never bothered. Just accelerate from a standing start reasonably quickly, and it'll be sorted for ages.

I have just had my 45K 3 year service on my MY00 Classic, and mentioned the clutch judder which has been there for ages but has been getting worse.
I said that I had heard of clutches being replaced under warranty, and would they look at it.
When I went to pick the car up they said a replacement had been approved under warranty, and they would ring when the parts came in.
That was 3 weeks ago.......still waiting!

Had 3 replaced on my 00MY and the last one finally worked.
The British are very good at just accepting faults as quirks of a particular car, but at the end of the day it's a fault, which IM will fix, with the support of a good dealer.
It maybe a bit late for you now though, with the warranty having expired.

My BMW was the same, I had it replaced on warranty, however the second one strated doing the same after a while so i left it for a bit and to be honest it actualy got better over the miles... with powerfull cars this seems to be a traite if you'r P-off try to get it changed, but it think it will smooth out again mine did so I'm not too worried about my STi8. It does it a bit at the moment but bad.

You have to remember what subaru did to sort this problem out, they replaced the clutches with P1 clutches ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
TBH, its easy enough to drive around, you shouldnt get any judder after a few mins, it also depends on how harsh you use your clutch, if you slip it a little then it is considerably better.
I get a little judder on my scoob(MY00) and i also drive around this without any problems, if your really bothered, then go for an organic ap or helix clutch as a replacement, they cost around the same price as a subaru one![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I've had 5 over 91/2 years and I've never bothered. It's not a case of accepting a fault - ask the Seat dealer how many times I took the briefly owned Seat Leon Cupra, back. As Tony said, it's so easy to drive around, and sort so that it doesn't return for many, many months and miles.
It's personal choice.

Just had mine replaced on an MY01 wagon. They did clutch and flywheel and it's made a tremendous difference to town driving.
Just be persistent and the dealer will get a PWA from subaru.

I have had seven clutches replaced under warrenty (MY00)in about 22,000 miles. The last one seems to have done the trick. They were all replaced without to much complaint from the dealership. We ended up getting in touch with Subaru UK and was told that an uprated version was being made to try to solve the problem. This is now fit in the car and has cured the judder from cold but I still get a slight judder with low revs when the car is hot sat in traffic. I have to just rev a little bit higher to stop it happening.

When I spoke to the dealer about it, they said that because of the age & millage (1999 T plate with 40k miles) they would have to take the clutch out & inspect it for wear & 'abuse'
There would be a risk that if the warranty claim was not approved backause of this wear then I would have to foot the bill for a new one or pay to get the old one put back it!! About £600
Not like everyone else this anoys me, and now wintewr is almost here its getting worse again, and I want a new clutch even if it makes no difference. Should I persue a replacement of just get over it?

My MY00 Turbo had the same judder, dealer replaced it & the flywheel in the last month of the warranty, no questions asked. Might have had something to do with it only having done 18,000 miles, or not(?). 3000 miles later & I get the mearest hint of judder when cold, but fades away when warmed-up. Last 2 cars had clutch judder (both Rovers), mechanic's advice at the time was to drive at a steady 50 mph or so, then press the clutch until the revs came up, for 5 seconds or so & the problem should disappear for a while. His explanation at the time was that the outlawing of asbestos had something to do with it.

Replaced my clutch earlier this year as there was virtually no bite left. Within a month the new one was juddering (cold & hot).
Agree with Toonman as with a standing start @ c5,000 revs cured it and it has not juddered since.

Bought an MY97 4 years ago, clutch juddered when cold, took it straight back to the dealer and got clutch and flywhel replaced under warranty. It still juddered every now and then, but much better. Bought an MY00 this year and the clutch is just perfect!!!

It's developed quite significantly now when cold on my 03 STi.
Still done 4000 miles in the new one and no problems yet (touch wood)

Got my new clutch fitted now (see earlier post).
Clutch housing, flywheel and clutch plate - £550 of parts incl VAT - all under warranty.
Nice light pedal action now, and no judder. So much better!

We don't have any idea how many owners have had clutches replaced under warranty. It could actually be a fairly small subset of the overall owner base.
The new age cars certainly seem to be less prone to this issue, so there's plenty of evidence to suggest they are doing so. As a general point though, if it was that easy to design out, they would have done it years ago.
Lol! In no way could these aftermarket solutions be described as costing the same as the current OE design.
Incidentally, I've had a Borg & Beck clutch in for about two months, and so far not a hint of judder. Not bad for a clutch that currently costs just over £100, a fraction of the cost of the AP/Helix/etc. replacements.
This issue is nowhere near as simple as you're making out.
