I am the owner of a 2002 Impreza WRX. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle it developed a loud squeal from the front brakes every time I depressed the footbrake.
This has continued for the last 20 months despite numerous trips to my local dealer they cannot solve the problem. The shims and pads have been replaced to no effect.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so how was it rectifyed.

i did, it was a stone in between the disc and dirt sheild!
check the groove in the pad is clear of debris and that the pad is nice and free in the caliper, when i rebuild the brakes on mine i put copper ease on the areas of the pad that sit in the caliper.
last thing might be nothing but check the mating surface of the pad does not have an over large chunk of ferrous material in it, like a bit of disc or just a small part of the pad friction material
other than that see what happens if you jump on the anchors to scrub everyhthing clean

The shims have been replaced, as per the Subaru Technical Service Bulletin, but modified brake discs I didnt know about them and neither does my dealer.
