I have just received an email saying the following

Dear PayPal member,

PayPal would like to inform you about some important information regarding your PayPal account. This account, which is associated with the email address

****@********.****.com

will be expiring within five business days. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, but this is occurring because all of our customers are required to update their account settings with their personal information.

We are taking these actions because we are implementing a new security policy on our website to insure everyone's absolute privacy. To avoid any interruption in PayPal services then you will need to run the application that we have sent with this email (see attachment) and follow the instructions. Please do not send your personal information through email, as it will not be as secure.

IMPORTANT! If you do not update your information with our secure application within the next five business days then we will be forced to deactivate your account and you will not be able to use your PayPal account any longer. It is strongly recommended that you take a few minutes out of your busy day and complete this now.

DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE VIA EMAIL! This mail is sent by an automated message system and the reply will not be received.

Thank you for using PayPal.

I tried to run the file that came attached but it came up that it had a virus. Looks very dodgy as there is no header logo from paypal. Anyway I deleted it Think I have done the right thing.

That could also have been a very good way for someone to scam your personal details and credit card info.

Paypal will only ever ask you to update your information through their site with a HTTPS start to the URL.

Check for more than just a https scheme! Consider:

Sorry for the poor wording of my last post. What I should have said was if the URL starts with https://www.paypal.com/ the it is OK. Paypal would never ask you to update your details by E-Mailing them

The exact wording is:
Make sure you never provide your password to fraudulent websites.

A genuine PayPal link will always begin with https://www.paypal.com/.

Remember to check your browser's Address/URL Bar to be sure you are on the real PayPal site.

If the URL does not begin with https://www.paypal.com/, you are not on a PayPal page.

PayPal will never ask you to enter your password in an email.

I am getting ~40 mail messages a day. 99% have virus's attached. Can't work out why I have been targeted. Not been to any dodgy sites. Why don't the ISP's scan emails and block them, my company email gateway does this.

I have had the paypal virus, the Microsoft update virus, the 'Undeliverable email' virus and the 'we have 100 million dollars and need you help in getting out of the country' scam.

When will it all end.
