Yep, agree with that, don't know about the classics but I used to drive a bugeye, now have a blobeye - the aircon on both comes on automatically if I select air flow to the windscreen.
The logic is that aircon removes moisture from the air, irrespective of the temperature setting, thus clearing the screen of condensation quicker.
At least it can be switched off again by pressing the aircon button. I previously drove a car where you couldn't switch off the aircon if you wanted air to the screen, which was a pain in the ar$e at times.

yeah teh air con comes on when you move the selector to the windscreen, its just an aid to getting ot clear, nothing more.
