Question

Just heard on the radio that Jenson Button got pulled for speeding in France doing 140mph. He got let off scott free after signing a couple of autographs!

Now I know Jenson's a top lad, who's got more driving talent in his little finger than I have in my entire body (and I did have a laugh when I heard it), but it does make you think.

It leaves you with two questions:

a) What do you think your chances are of getting let off for doing 140?

b) What the hell were the French cops using to catch him in the first place?

Not quite scott free, he got fined 700 quid which for him is about 10 minutes money.

I suspect they caught him by using the time he took between toll booths. He was driving the new BMW 330Diesel. Which for a BM is a very good car indeed.

I heard he paid it on the spot as well, 'Do you take Williams gendarme?'

I bet BMW are happy too!

He was on an autoroute so they may well have got him with a laser. Currently, the authorities in European countries don't have the ability to take away the licence of an offender who lives in a different European country although, as you might expect, the powers-that-be are about to change that.

Jenson didn't get off, he probably got what any of us would have got for a similar offence. He would be advised not to try it in the UK though .... [where it seems to be an offence just to drive a car! ]

I'll stick my neck out here and make myself (more) unpopular..

If it were any "normal" bod in the UK doing that kind of speed, he'd lose his licence in a trice.

I don't know what the rules are like in France, but I gather they're equally hard on speeders.

As these people are idolised by the public, I think sportspeople should be setting examples, and not bring their sport into disrepute.

For example, Stan Collymore should be banned from football in my view, and Jensen Button should lose his driving licence, and his racing licence for doing such stupidly high speeds.

Don't get me wrong, on the track I'm rooting for him all the way..

Just my 2 cents.
