makes me laugh that scoobs have a boy-racer image yet anyone under 30 with full NCD cant really afford to insure one. i think its because all boy-racers (myself included) aspire to one and once we can afford one we all have wifes and kids.. therefore having to buy something 'sensible'.

I've also just turned 22, and will be classed as a 'boy-racer' and to be fair with the drop in prices of older ones there are a few boy-racers out there getting them now. I don't clss myself as one tho.

Slag-xo, escort turbos, cossy's have more boy racery image for me among others. But to be fair most scoobs I see around are tanking it, and it's not as if they blend into the scenary. People always become anti something when it's popular in this country, build something up, then nock it down. Scoob's a motoring ICON, the likes very few other cars in history can live upto! And like someone said, they're not cheap, there not something you can do up in your garage with some bits form halfords.

Anyway do any of those men and motor presenters actually have any motoring journalism background? Lots of them are just repsenters, working on what ever they can till they get their break into the mainstream. I mean gail porter was on the itv one, what does she know!? I could do a better job than half of them

Scooby owners are exectuive male racers, it's different - more classy

One of the reasons i got rid of mine because all the Boy Racers have them near me now.. seem's every 18 year old with a Rich Daddy has an early WRX or Uk now (and being a young 'un myself, i seem to be classified as a boy racer even though i don't have the compulsory sun strip )

I'd love an evo, they still seem to be out of reach of the Max Power brigade at the mo, but the insurance is a killer on the Evo's

Looks like an Integra Type-R for me

Im afraid it already has that Boy Racer image.

being a boy racer is not only about thrashing about driving like a *****. it also encompases, neons, big wheels, picnic table spoiler, sun strips, making your sport look like a turbo or making your turbo look like an sti or making your sti look like a steaming heap by adding *tasteful* modifications.

For many people, gold wheels, tinted windows and rediculous sized exhaust = tarts handbag styling and a boy racer's image...

but these people have never driven one.

For the un-educated every day car driver I would say that they think classic Impreza's are definitely boy racer cars as you hardly see any of them in standard form.
The wheels have been changed, big spoiler added, loud exhaust, sometimes a dump valve etc etc.
This is a typical boy racer image, be it a Nova, saxo or a Scoob.

Forget, for a moment, what the car can do, how it drives, who drives them etc.

To the average Joe on the streets, whenever they see a scoob, they will see a 'normal' car with big spoilers, some tacky livery and a bonnet scoop.

If that's not a boy racer image then I don't know what is.

I agree alot of younger folks are getting imprezas now but they are also realizing that ownership doesn't come cheap,i have a 95 uk turbo and i have 18"s Blitz and a dump valve but i am not a boy racer,in fact i'm not any kind of racer it sits in the garage out of this ****e weather most the time.

See me, 34 , Sun strip, STiV spoiler (Big one for you lot who are not quite sure of ya spoilers ) MY00 UK car, 17 inchers, tinted ,dump valve and full decat.
Not a boy racer, just wanted to have my own scoob and do what I wanted to it to make it look and sound like the cars that used to catch my eye 8 years ago. I wanted one because of the looks and the sound. Not because of what the press said and not because i was being a car fashion victim, like some of you lot seem to have been
Now it makes me shake my head when I read that people actually are that shallow that they are bothered about a cars image so bothered infact that they SELL the car HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA The image thing becomes important when you are buying Ferrari's,Astons etc, not a sub £20k jap tin box. Early cars are now sub £10k, you don't get prestige for that sort of money So stop feeling sorry for youselves when it doesn't come and people are not massaging your ego every day about your car.
It's your car, do what you like, drive it carefully and with consideration for others and guess what, people stop frowning and judging and actually admire the car.

Selling a scoob because you are worried about what total strangers think, or the odd throw away comment You don't deserve scoobs, go get a TT if it bothers you that much

The big difference with the Impreza, for those in the know, is the car is designed to look like that. The car is function over form....the WRC car has a spoiler that size for a reason, an exhaust that size for a reason, large wheels and brakes are needed....the Imprezas we drive fundimentally the same car.

The boy racer image makes you think of someone trying to make a car into something it isn't by adding 200kg of plastic parts. Unfortunately most people still make that association with the Impreza.

As regards an image, almost every car has a stereotypical driver:
Porsche Boxster, Audi TT, BMW, Ferarri, 4x4 school run jeeps, Fords esp. the Mondeo, Mercs. to name but a few....they all immediately imply certain things about their owners, whether its true or not.

Personally couldn't give a t*ss about the image of the car...what it does matters to me !!!

Mikey you are missing the point, the fact is that the Subaru Impreza has always had and always will have a boy racer image.
It doesn't matter if you are not a boy racer, at the end of the day people look at the car and say "He's in a Subaru, he must be a boy racer"
That we cannot change.
I am in a MY00 with a full de-cat, 17" alloys & a standard spoiler because like you I wanted the noise and better handling, but I still get accused by my work colleagues & family for that matter of going through a mid life crisis and being a born again boy racer.
Fecking cheek of it, I drive like Miss Daisy

I see ya point Danny, but does it bother you? really I know the difference between a boy racer and myself. There's more to it than just the car, it's a culture. A culture that i have neither the time nor inclination to indulge in.
If people think I do, and make this assumption in the 30 seconds that they see my car, then really, I have no problem with them.
Yes the car is branded, but it's the car, like has been said, you don't know if it's directed at you or indeed if that person even thought it. When people look as you drive up a high street, they could be looking for a multitude of reasons, that sounds good, what is it? or that looks fantastic or it's one of those loud thingies. Obviously you'll get the, look at that noisy T*at, etc but as I've said before, I certainly wouldn't let the possibility of someone slagging me off because of the car I drive, influence me into selling it.
We've all looked at poorly moddified saxo's nova's etc, but think back, did you honestly, look at the car, and think bad things aboiut the driver or did you think bad stuff about the car. Bet it wasn't the driver, bet you didn't even look at them.
Now think about the last Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche or even TT that you saw. You ALWAYS look at the driver. It's what they have paid for. Next time you see a yellow M3, bet you look at the driver, it's the way of the world.
My modded car is for MY benefit, I tinted the windows because i didn't like the enquiring looks at every set of traffic lights, I love the sound, the spoiler makes it look better (IMHO) The dump valve is there to fill the gap in that glorious sound coming from the exhaust, it keeps the senses awake and as such, for me, enhances the enjoyment of driving.
If strangers think I'm a boy racer or old man having a bit of a midlife crisis, I'm ok with that, they are strangers. My friends and family know why I do it and that will do for me.
I bet the anti max power brigade never go to meets either. Bad for the image to be seen with too many other scoobs (Too common ) Can't be doing with talking to someone who might know more about the cars than them (Oh, THAT's why you have a dump valve!)
Anyways, I've droned on enough I think, Live and let live, If you have a loud, blinged, scoob that's not standard at all, be proud of it and don't worry about shallow folk

Mikey <Got the flame kit because I, not my missus or my mates or total strangers posting on Scoobynet, but ME,I thought it was cool and I was right >

things like novas, saxo, pugs with all the cheap cr*p on and massive exhausts that sound tinny is pure boy racerish cause the engines are just spinelss

That is a typical boy racer attitude I am afraid to say, why the **** should I move out your way just cos you are in a Subaru with a loud exhaust?

good point again Danny That type of statement makes me cringe also and is why I am not interested in that "culture". I still wouldn't sell my car though because of a few miss placed words

[Slippers on, pipe lit]

Call me a snob, but a non-standard, loud exhaust and big spoilered scoob shouts "I am a wide boy". A standard one does this to to a somewhat lesser extent. I will probably move to a newer model next year as the classic here has attracted the type of baseball cap-wearing, mega sub-woofer twonk with whom I would rather not be associated....

Well, all I can say is i've noticed poor spelling = boy racer. I think you no what I mean...

You can't argue that big spoilers, bonnet scoops, etc. project a boy racer image - after all, that's what the Saxo/Pugs/Novas are all trying to copy. Doesn't mean they're scumbags or sad gits. Just means they can't afford a more expensive car.

I started with a Metro 1.0 City - tarted it up a bit. Looking back now seems very sad, but it's all I could afford and seemed great at the time!

Cheers all.
