Having now breathed new life into my 02 wrx with a new exhaust system a collegue has told me to get a quick acting waste gate but i have know idea. Where do i get one? which one to get? how much are they? and is it really worth it?

Sounds like your colleague is a little confused.
You can buy external wastegates, but there'd be little point in doing so in your situation; it'd be a lot of effort and expense for practically zero gain.
You can also buy aftermarket dumpvalves (which I suspect is what he really meant), but they don't make any real difference to the performance either, unless you're running enough boost to make the standard one leak.
